Wyld's Great Globe, a scientific exhibition in Leicester Square, London, from 1851 to 1861, is
one of the London institutions that faculty member Bernard Lightman has studied to understand
how science was popularized to Victorian audiences in the second half of the nineteenth century.

This "Monkey selfie" was taken by a female Celebes crested macaque using nature photographer
David Slater’s equipment led to a copyright dispute over their ownership. PhD student Eleanor
Louson examines animal representation and 21st century conceptions of nature, culture, and
visual authenticity.

Graduate Program Director Aryn Martin explores the material-semiotic labours of those making
knowledge about microchimerism. In practice, this means making visible both the assumptions
embedded in categories like “male,” “fetal,” and “autoimmune” used to describe this image.

Canadian medical illustrator Dorothy Foster Chubb's detailed carbon-dust drawings form the
basis for Grant's Atlas of Anatomy, now in its 13th edition.

Our Program
Science & Technology Studies offers an interdisciplinary program of study focused
on the critical role of science and technology, both past and present. Research in the
field applies the methods and theories of the humanities, social sciences and
cultural studies to the examination of technology and scientific knowledge and
practice.
Science & Technology Studies is particularly well positioned to provide analytical,
critical and historically informed insight to complex questions regarding science,
health and engineering policy, intellectual property, expertise, ethics, and the public
understanding of science. This field contributes to timely debates that bridge the
academy and the world beyond it with a dexterity that is more difficult to achieve
from within the traditional disciplines.

Shut Up and Write!
Feb 11 @ 10:00 am – 12:00 pm
Tired of working on your thesis, dissertation, or book alone? Need the motivation
of others working around you to stay on track? Wish there were more opportunities
to develop a community on campus?
The Shut Up and Write! sessions will continue every Thursday morning in the
winter term. Bring any writing assignment (course papers, theses, dissertations or
other publications) and get some serious writing done in a supportive community.
No registration is required. All are welcome.
***About Shut Up and Write***
Shut Up and Write! began as meet-up in San Francisco designed to help writers
develop a creative community, enjoy some companionship, and do some serious
writing. It has since expanded into academia, especially for graduate students and
postdocs feeling isolated while working on their theses, dissertations, and
publications. Shut Up and Write! is a regular get-together where you prioritize
writing over everything else (e.g. no email, no Instagram, no texting). It’s an
opportunity for writers to establish a writing routine, do some intensive work, and
break through blocks in a supportive atmosphere using the Pomodoro Technique.
Each Shut up and Write! session includes:

10 minutes for introductions and chat

2-3 rounds of writing Pomodoros (each Pomodoro includes 25 minutes of intensive writing
plus a 5 minute break)

Time to discuss writing, trade productivity tips, and get to know each other. On occasion, a
post-doc or an expert from the Writing Centre will drop by to share strategies
