Introducing Low Vision Aids
Practical Activities.
Work in pairs. Compare how easy or difficult it is for the VIP in comparison
to the sighted partner.
Please put on the simulated specs before starting these activities.

Telescopes.
1. Follow the instructions for holding a telescope properly to ensure a steady
image.
Support the aid properly by placing an elbow on a table or by tucking both
hands into the chest. When you have tried this a few times try holding the
other elbow and supporting the aid.
Focusing the aid: rotate lens slowly, clockwise and anti-clockwise until
clearest image is obtained.
2. Locating a target.
Locate the general area of the target using unaided vision. (The white board
at the front of the room.)
Now scan the area in a logical fashion for the exact location. Scan the area
from left to right.
 Find the snellen chart and read it.
 Find and identify the BUST/ LH symbols. How many are there?
3. Tracking Techniques.
Look at the arrowed lines on the wall. Follow the lines and count the number
of X’s.
4. Look out the window. Can you identify any of the buildings?
5. Take one of the newspapers.
Locate and write down the following.
The heading: the features line (or column); the main story headings.
6 Look at the advert: how many monsters can you see?
Repeat the above exercises using simulated specs.

1. Make up an address book. Write it on the lined paper. Use a ruler to
make columns. Write as neatly as you can.

2. Look at ‘The Story Maker’s Chest”.
Write down the contents of ‘The Story Maker Chest’. You will find this
information in the leaflet.
What is in ‘The Story Makers Curiosity Sack?
Complete an order form for the following requisition: The Story Maker’s Chest.

3. Look at the advert from ‘The Metro”.
What activities took place at Ocean Terminal from 5th-9th April?
How much did all but one of the activities cost?
What activity did you need to pay for?

4. Look at the articles on Low Vision Aids in the poly pockets.
Select a few of the articles. Try various simulated specs. Use the
magnifiers to read them.
Is it easier to read with any of the simulated specs? If so, which ones?
Maps, Charts etc.
1. Look at the small pictorial map of Edinburgh Centre.
Put on a pair of simulated specs. Try using different magnifiers.
Find Dynamic Earth. Write down the shortest route you would take to reach
The Royal Yacht Britannia travelling via London Road.
Describe how you would reach Thistle Street from the Grassmarket.
What building is at the junction of Princes Street and Lothian Road?
Travelling by car, how would I reach Leith Walk from Gilmore Place?
Remember cars cannot drive along Princes Street.
2. Look at the advert Picture the Loan.
I need to borrow £50.000 over a 15-year period.
How much will my monthly payments be?
What is the phone number for this company?
3. Buffet King Leaflet.
Look at the leaflet to find out the following information.
Where is the Buffet King situated?
How much does the Super Lunch Buffet cost? What is the latest time that
you can leave to pay this price?
What discount will you receive if you take this flyer with you?
4. Look at the train timetable.
What time do I need to leave Linlithgow to reach Falkirk High at 13.29, on a
Sunday?
I got on the train at Haymarket at 13.08. What time should I arrive at
Bridge of Allan?
How long does it take to travel between Polmont and Stirling from Monday
to Saturday? Is there any difference in the length of time this will take if I
travel on a Sunday?
5. Look at the world map.
What is the time difference between the UK and the following places?
