ANNOUNCEMENT DAE-BRNS Biennial Symposium on Emerging Trends in Separation Science and Technology (SESTEC-2012) The fifth SESTEC symposium on “Emerging Trends in Separation Science and Technology (SESTEC2012)”, sponsored by the Board of Research in Nuclear Sciences (BRNS) and organized by the Association of Separation Scientists and Technologists (ASSET) will be held during February 27 March 01, 2012 at SVKM’s Mithibai College, Vile Parle, Mumbai. The objective of this four-day Symposium is to provide a forum to scientists and engineers to discuss the recent advances in the area of separation of metals such as actinides, lanthanides, Zr, Co, Mo, Cs, Sr and platinum group metals which are of interest to the Department of Atomic Energy. In addition, speciation of actinides will be is included as one of the scopes of the Symposium. SESTEC-2012 will provide a platform to scientists and engineers to discuss emerging trends in the area of separation science and technology which are likely to have an impact on the DAE’s programme related to nuclear fuel cycle activities as well as production of isotopes. Scope of the symposium is as follows: Scope Two of the major consequences of neutron induced nuclear reactions with natural uranium targets, nuclear fission and production of trans-uranium elements, have contributed significantly to the separation chemistry of actinides. Since the early days of the Manhattan Project, much of the interest centered on the separation of trace amounts of plutonium from large excess of uranium and moderate concentration of fission/decay products. Solvent extraction and ion exchange have played a key role in isolation, separation, and purification of uranium and plutonium both at analytical as well as at industrial scale. Sustained interest in improved nuclear fuel-reprocessing methods and growing concern for the fate of actinides at potential waste disposal sites provide continuous motivation for investigating the complexation and separation behavior of actinides. Separation chemistry of actinides plays a pivotal role at different stages of the nuclear fuel cycle: (a) recovery and purification from ores, (b) chemical quality control of nuclear fuels, (c) fuel reprocessing, and (d) waste management. The first use of solvent extraction based industrial process in DAE dates back to the late fifties and was aimed at the purification of uranium required for the front end of the nuclear fuel cycle. With our policy of three stages of nuclear power programme, many challenging areas have emerged especially for the back end of the nuclear fuel cycle which involves spent fuel reprocessing and radioactive waste management. The need for reprocessing of high burn up fuels and the growing need for environment protection have made it essential to look for alternative solvents as well as alternative technologies. SESTEC-2012 will provide a platform to scientists and engineers to discuss emerging trends in the area of separation science and technology which are likely to have an impact on the DAE’s programme related to nuclear fuel cycle activities as well as production of isotopes. Contributed papers will be presented in oral / poster sessions. Abstract Submission Abstracts of the contributed papers should be submitted before November 01, 2011. The length of the abstract should be limited to one page (Abstract Template) including figures, tables and references. Abstract submission should be done through e-mail (sestec2012@gmail.com). Abstracts will be peer reviewed (Technical Committee Chairman: Dr. A. Goswami, Head, Radiochemistry Division, BARC, Trombay, Mumbai – 400 085) prior to inclusion in the symposium proceedings. Limited number of papers will be selected for peer reviewed Journal Publication and the authors will be intimated in advance about this. For more information please see the attached ABSTRACT TEMPLATE. Acceptance of the paper The acceptance of the abstract will be notified by November 30, 2011. The preprint volumes/CD containing the invited talks and extended abstracts of contributed papers will be distributed to the delegates during the meeting. Registration fee received after the deadline will be accepted with additional Rs. 200/-. For the spouses/accompanying persons of outstation delegates, accommodation can be arranged after registration and prior intimation (see below). They will be able to get food and other provisions at the hostel/guest house. The registration fee includes delegate kit, admission for all sessions, a set of conference materials, (book of symposium proceedings either as a book or as a CD and a souvenir), lunch and tea during symposium. Financial Assistance It may be possible to provide TA/DA to deserving student participants where sponsoring institution is unable to arrange. Request for financial assistance must reach the Meeting Secretariat not later than January 15, 2012. Between November and February, the skies are clear, and the temperature is cooler. From March the temperature becomes warm and humid till mid June, the beginning of monsoon. During monsoon there are torrential rains, sometimes causing the flooding of major roads and streets of Mumbai. The average rainfall which is brought by the south-west monsoon winds in Mumbai is 180 cms. Monsoon ends by the end of September. October is comparatively hot and humid.
