Main Job Purpose
 Responsible for promoting and facilitating the entire donation process by working in
close conjunction with all staff in critical care areas to support and maximise organ/tissue
donation.
 Responsible for system building and working closely with identified individuals in order to
maintain a robust infrastructure to support and maximise donation. This includes
analysis, planning, design, implementation, evaluation and continuance of educational
and quality assurance programmes with all stakeholders within agreed and defined
clinical area.
 To provide support and appropriate information to families of those that are critically ill
and the acutely bereaved, relating to end of life choices, specifically to include organ and
tissue donation.
 To ensure that donation proceeds in line with appropriate legislation and national
policies and procedures.
 Participate in the training and development of donation services team members
 To obtain all relevant information enabling transplant centres and tissue establishments
to assess the suitability of potential donors. This may include the requirement to
negotiate further tests and investigations.
 To maximise the placement of organs for transplant following the national offering
sequence. This process will include assessment of the patient’s clinical condition,
implementation of donor management protocols, review of medical records and
obtaining a history from the patient’s General Practitioner.
 Advise and support the clinical staff in the optimisation of organs for transplant through
appropriate donor management.
 Communicate with tissue establishments and refer tissue for retrieval in accordance with
consent/authorisation obtained.
 Collect and collate data for the Potential Donor Audit and any other audits within defined
area of responsibility in a timely manner.

Facilitate and support education of health care professionals and the general public, in
line with agreed service strategy.

Ensure the most efficient and effective use of resources available, to maximise donation
potential
 Participate in the application of quality initiatives with the aim of improving donation
and promoting the further development of organ/tissue donation, taking into account,
family and staff feedback, and ensure appropriate dissemination.
 Ensure use of evidence-based protocols in all aspects of the role
 In conjunction with the team manager and regional manager analyse current situation
and determine the future service needs to fulfil local and national requirements.
WORKING ENVIRONMENT AND EFFORT
Working Conditions include:
 Working in and visiting a wide range of hospitals within area of responsibility.
 Exposure to invasive abdominal/thoracic surgery (approximately once a week).
 Direct contact with untested blood samples (approximately once a week).
 Exposure to body fluids and organs (approximately once a week).
 Exposure to the deceased in order to complete the final act of care procedure
(approximately once a week).
Mental Effort
 Requirement for intense concentration within the working period (daily).
 Requirement to work in unfamiliar environments with unfamiliar staff (two-three times a
week).
 Need to adapt to the many changes in working practice in a rapidly developing
speciality (as required).
 Respond immediately to unpredictable nature of workload and on call commitments
(daily).
 Requirement to act proactively/reactively to media opportunities and enquiries.
Physical Effort
Requirement to drive long distances throughout geographical area of responsibility (daily).

Requirement to work unsocial hours throughout the night and at weekends
(approximately once a week).
Requirement to work long periods of time during the donation process (approximately
once per week).
Requirement to provide on-call service, which equates to approximately 5-6 days per
month.
Emotional Effort
 Exposure to the suddenly bereaved (weekly).
 Exposure to distressing and emotional circumstances (weekly or more frequent).
 Exposure to an ever changing workforce in regional hospitals (approximately two-three
times a week).
 Requesting of personal and sensitive lifestyle information from the suddenly bereaved
(approximately weekly or more frequently).
 Exposure to the deceased in order to accompany and support family members in
viewing the patient after retrieval surgery following death (approximately weekly).
 Negotiation with clinical staff and other hospital staff in highly charged situations
surrounding emotive and at time ambiguous areas of practice relating to end of life
decisions for patients.
Conditions of Service
 This is not intended to be an exhaustive list of responsibilities, but more an outline
framework against which the post holder will be given flexibility to define the detail.
Any changes will be the subject of consultation with the post holder.
 The terms and conditions as specified within Agenda for Change and NHSBT policies
and procedures cover this post.
 This job description is for guidance only and may change to meet the needs of the
service. Any changes will be discussed and agreed with the post holder.
 Participate in an on-call rota (may be subject to change depending on team
circumstances) to facilitate donor referrals 24 hours a day, 365 days a year with
internal cover.
 You are required to adhere to and perpetuate legislation and Policies and Procedures
e.g. Human Tissue Act, Health and Safety, the active discouragement of smoking at
work, Equal Opportunities in employment, including responsibilities under the Disability
Discrimination Act.
 You are required to comply with the requirements of the Data Protection Act 1998. You
are also subject to the confidentiality clauses of your Professional Code of Conduct.
Unauthorised disclosure of information constitutes a serious breach of discipline and
could lead to dismissal.
 Post holders will be trained and assessed in post to ensure they achieve the following
in order to work to this job description:
 A satisfactory Performance and Personal Development Review.
 Achievement of required skills and completion of national competencies.
 Completion of Organ Donation and Transplantation ‘Introduction to Coordination’
training course or equivalent. .
