HOW TO USE THE OPTICAL SQUARE TO SET OUT A RIGHT
ANGLE
This tutorial will show you how to set out a right angle with the optical square.
approximately 5 minutes.
You will need:

2 fixed points on the ground, A & B, as a base line

3 No. Ranging rods.

It takes
Place one of the ranging rods at point B
Hold the optical square over point A, use a ranging rod to steady the optical square.
Sight point B over the top at the left hand side of the optical square.
Have a partner move the 3rd ranging rod at point C to the left or right until the image (appearing
in the left hand half of the optical square) aligns with the ranging rod B over the top of the
optical square (Fig. 2).
