Strategic Direction 1 – SUNY Library Systems (Shared Services and Infrastructure)
SUNYConnect has established Aleph 500 as the common Library Management System within
SUNY, has implemented a Union Catalog of all SUNY library holdings and has adopted SFX as
its’ OpenURL application. A solution for Universal Borrowing will be selected by Jan. 2006.
This strategic direction will identify greater efficiencies in the utilization, management and
enhancement of these shared applications, and will recommend additional applications that
should be utilized on a University-wide basis.
The SAC will establish a committee or committees of SUNY librarians, library directors, Chief
Information Officers, the SUNY Faculty Senate and the SUNY Student Assembly to work on
this strategic direction. Representatives from University-wide programs (i.e. OLIS, ITEC, SLN)
may be asked to participate in an Ex Officio capacity. The SAC will provide the committee with
an initial set of recommended objectives, activities and performance indicators for this strategic
direction. The committee may propose modifications to the objectives, activities and
performance indicators to SAC at any time. The SAC will be responsible for financial and
policy oversight of the committee’s activity.

Strategic Direction 2 – SUNY-wide Collaborative Collections and Access Management
SUNYConnect has established a core set of electronic resources that are available to all
campuses. SUNY can increase access to scholarly materials and generate additional efficiencies
by working collaboratively on purchases of electronic and print resources. Additionally, the IDS
project among the four year colleges has shown that collaborative collection development of
print materials is contingent upon timely delivery of resources.
This strategic direction will develop frameworks and procedures to increase access to scholarly
information for all SUNY libraries to support teaching, learning and research. This will be
accomplished by collaborative acquisition of and subscription to materials, backed by service
commitments for delivery of materials among SUNY libraries.
The SAC will establish a committee or committees of SUNY librarians, access services staff,
library directors, the SUNY Faculty Senate and the SUNY Student Assembly to work on this
strategic direction. Representatives from University-wide programs (i.e. OLIS, ITEC, SLN) may
be asked to participate in an Ex Officio capacity. The SAC will provide the committee with an
initial set of recommended objectives, activities and performance indicators for this strategic
direction. The committee may propose modifications to the objectives, activities and
performance indicators to SAC at any time. The SAC will be responsible for financial and
policy oversight of the committee’s activity.

Strategic Direction 3 – SUNY-wide Digital Library
The SUNY Digital Library Strategic Direction will focus on acquiring scholarly content in
digital format, hosting digitized materials from SUNY collections, integrating campus
maintained digitized materials, enabling the publication of original scholarly materials, fostering
innovation in scholarly communication and enhancing services for discovering, sharing,
manipulating, and integrating scholarly content.
Policies will be established to clearly articulate preservation policies of digital materials housed
in the SUNY Digital Library.
The SAC will establish a committee or committees of SUNY librarians, preservation specialists,
library directors, Chief Information Officers, the SUNY Faculty Senate and the SUNY Student
Assembly to work on this strategic direction. Representatives from University-wide programs
(i.e. OLIS, ITEC, SLN) may be asked to participate in an Ex Officio capacity. The SAC will
provide the committee with an initial set of recommended objectives, activities and performance
indicators for this strategic direction. The committee may propose modifications to the
objectives, activities and performance indicators to SAC at any time. The SAC will be
responsible for financial and policy oversight of the committee’s activity.
