THE SAMSUNG/ ROYAL BRITISH LEGION/ BRITISH KORAN VETERANS ASSOCIATION
SCHOLARSHIP FUND
Registered Charity Number 1051545
Thank you for your interest in this Scholarship. The Fund was established by the BKVA
following a donation of £500,000 by Samsung Europe, part of one of Korea’s largest
industrial conglomerates, the Samsung Group. It was launched in 1995 by the British
Korean Veterans’ Association (BKVA) and is registered with the Charity Commission. It
was set up in memory of the 1,078 British servicemen and women who gave their lives in
the Korean War (1950-1953) in which 100,000 plus members of the British Armed Forces
served. The successful Scholarship candidate will be required to attend memorial events
held to commemorate the British war effort in Korea.
The Fund is administered on the BKVA’s behalf by The Royal British Legion in association with
Samsung Europe. These bodies will be responsible for carrying out candidate selection according
to the criteria mentioned in the application form.
The Scholarship offers a suitably qualified candidate the opportunity to live and work in the
Republic of Korea (South Korea) whilst pursuing postgraduate study. Subject to suitability, the
successful candidate will be able to study for a one or two-year course in the Republic of Korea. It
is intended that the scholarship should help generate understanding between Britain and the
Republic of Korea and to build even closer links between the two countries.
The successful candidate will undertake the academic course of their choice at a university in
Seoul. The Scholarship will cover tuition fees, living expenses, return flight costs and travel
insurance. The scholar will be required to arrange his/her academic and travel proposals and to
account for all major costs. Assistance will be given in sourcing a suitable academic course.
The scholar must undertake an intensive Korean language course in the UK, to be paid for by the
Scholarship Fund, before travelling to the Republic of Korea. It is expected that the successful
student will travel to the Republic of Korea in March 2016 at the beginning of the Korean academic
year. However, there is some variation between individual universities as there is also a
September entry – so you will need to look into this first.
The university course in Seoul will be conducted in the English Language.
The successful candidate will be required to present a report of his/her stay in the Republic of
Korea to representatives of the BKVA, The Royal British Legion and Samsung Europe.
Please telephone Scarlet Blackshaw at The Royal British Legion (0203 207 2138) if you have any
queries regarding the Scholarship.
