Cambridge Elementary Magnet School Kindergarten-6th Grade The garden at Cambridge Elementary was started in early October. The children involved with this garden are the students who participate in the after school program supported by the 21st Century Grant. The students took an interest in this garden from the first introduction and the idea of planting a garden still holds a high interest. The idea of having a garden came about when the school had two raised beds that were not being used. It was soon determined they would make an excellent place to start a garden. The children were excited about the idea and were willing to work. To start, the beds needed to be weeded before filling them with new soil. The students then planted seeds or starter plants. They water, weed, and have even experienced the thrill of picking the lettuce and eating it as an after school snack. The children were educated on the use of sunscreen and put it on before working in the garden. From what has been observed the children working and caring for this garden became very involved and dedicated in taking care of the garden. They are enthusiastic about working at the garden on a daily basis. They often will ask the teacher if they will be working in the garden after school. This garden has made a significant impact on these students: It has given them a sense of starting something and following through to get the end result. They have learned how to cooperate with each other and share responsibility for different tasks. For example, they take turns watering and planting the different seeds. The garden in these pictures was truly cared for and prepared mostly by the students with the help and direction of the teacher. Once they knew what was expected of them, they expressed wanting to take care of it and watch it grow. Students diligently help till to make their beautiful garden. The students finally get to enjoy to fruits of their labor.
