POSITION CONTEXT
Council
Overview
The Roper Gulf Regional Council provides a range of support services for residents that spans an area of
185,000 sq km (80% the size of Victoria) on the South Eastern region outside of Katherine, Northern
Territory. The total estimated resident population of the Council is 6,919.
The overall vision of Roper Gulf Regional Council is to be a sustainable, viable and vibrant leader, working
towards a better future through effective use of all resources. This serves to give strategic direction to the
Council’s service delivery and it’s partnership with the NT and Australian Governments and other
stakeholders.
Roper Gulf Regional Council incorporates 11 main communities where core and agency services are
delivered such as Council Administration, Waste Management, Postal and Tourism support, Youth, Sport &
Recreation Services, Aged Care Support, Child Care Support, Library Facilities, CDEP Programs, Essential
Services, Power and Water services, Night Patrol and many more.
The Council’s mission statement of “Working as one towards a better future through effective use of all
resources” combines a strategic direction for the all areas in Core Services and Non-Core Services in
providing services “in the bush”. The Council works in partnership with Federal and State governments and
with a range of community organisations to make a real difference to the well-being of community residents
in remote East Northern Territory.

This position of Municipal and Local Project Coordinator is located in the Directorate of Council Services and
Infrastructure.
Principal
Objectives

To work with Councils business units, risk practitioners and other stakeholder groups
across the regional boundaries to develop and support the implementation of Council’s
town priority projects.

provision of quality aquatic and sport and recreation services ensuring safe and healthy swimming
and recreation outcomes for the community;

Ensure effective operation, care and maintenance of resources, including but not limited to, vehicle,
plant, equipment, tools and materials in a safe and efficient manner;

assist in the delivery of core municipal services including litter, waste, traffic, natural resource and
asset management for the community and surrounding outstations.

Maintaining safe and enjoyable recreational and leisure facilities within Council’s parks, reserves,
sports grounds, CBD’s and the urban landscape.

Operate and maintain Council plant in a professional and safe manner.

An incumbent may be required to drive considerable distances in the course of their duties and must
possess a current Class C Drivers Licence with a manual driving capacity.

Some out of hours work, and occasional travel to remote communities necessitating overnight
absences may be required.

Appointment will be to a specific and depending on organisational needs. The incumbent may be
assigned to other areas to perform work of a similar nature appropriate to the classification on a
temporary or continuing basis.


Undertake a new criminal history check at commencement of employment with RGRC

At commencement of employment hold a current Working with Children Clearance Notice (OCHRE
Card) or provide an application receipt for an exemption to be approved by SAFE NT prior to
commencing

Be an Australian Resident or provide the current, relevant Visa to work within Australia

It is a condition of employment with Roper Gulf Regional Council that you must;

Update Criminal History Check annually as required through out period of employment through the
HR Department

Renew your ochre card clearance every two years through the HR Department


KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
General Works

Maintain and construct operations within Council reserves such as grass mowing, playground
maintenance, sports ground maintenance, tree, shrub and garden planting & maintenance, including
manual work and machinery operation.

Inspect structures and amenities and report any damage to the Council Services Manager promptly.

Assist with construction projects and major maintenance works as instructed.

Maintain presentation of open spaces, verges, drains etc, and keeping weed growth to a minimum.
Report daily to the Council Services Manager for instruction and inform of any operational matters

Organise, supervise staff and operate ride-on mowers, push mowers, whipper snippers, brush-cutters,
power brooms, petrol driven chainsaws and associated equipment and vehicles.


Ensure the safe and secure storage of all goods, which can be construed to be poisonous,
flammable, corrosive or explosive and remove all such goods from the site as soon as the need for
the use of them ceases, so that Council meets Work Health Authority standards;

Ability to spray / spread pesticides, herbicides, fertilisers, fungicides and other chemicals safely and to
supervise staff in the same responsibilities.


with parks and gardens maintenance.

Ability to deal with or solve daily work issues by reviewing the options available and

and to identify complex problems that require referral the next level of management to
resolve.

This position requires a person who has the ability to prioritise competing demands and meet deadlines
as set by the Works Supervisors. Good physical fitness is important as the person is required to carry
out manual labouring tasks.
A high standard of service is necessary as the person is required to take appropriate action in response
to a variety of internal and external demands. Good listening and communication skills are essential to
ensure directions and instructions are carried out safely, promptly and accurately.
The position is expected to work in an outdoor environment under varying weather conditions
throughout various sites within the Council.
