Minutes of previous meeting Moved: Jason Poppy Seconded: Nora Pennefather CARRIED 2. Business Arising - Nil 3. Presidents Report Tuki Brown Before I start I would like to apologise if I have not mentioned your, club event or team, as there are so many noteworthy contributions that people have made to paddling in NQ Zone over the past 12 months. First of all, a big thank you to all the members of the zone committee. It is often a tireless job that receives very little thanks. Also need to mention the many other paddlers from NQ zone who have helped with the running of regattas this season, particularly the Hamilton Cup. This also includes that many paddlers and family who have towed IRB’s or the zone trailer up and down the coast between regattas. NQ Zone covers a rather large area, and without the assistance of all of these people the sport would not exist (or at least in its current form). Also need to thank all the clubs who hosted a regatta this season. As usual, they are the backbone of our sport. A special mention to Tania Moohin for consistently passing on information to all members and working tirelessly to manage the zones funds. This is an ongoing job that is very time-consuming. Great to see the hats getting to clubs prior to the 2012 season – the zone hats are very distinctive and are great to see the majority of paddlers wearing them at regattas. The 2011 season saw the Dam Outrigger host their first regatta (which was very well attended by all clubs in the northern part of the zone). For a club of around 15 registered paddlers they did a fantastic job. 2011 also saw the introduction of the Hekili Great Barrier Reef Challenge, as a part of the Cairns Ironman. The event was well run and supported by paddlers from the far north. The Marlin Coast challenge is now in its fourth year and going from strength to strength, with a record number of entries to date…. Lets hope for a strong 20-25knot SE for the race. AOCRA NQ ZONE MINUTES OF ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING HELD AT EIMEO SURF CLUB, MACKAY Saturday 10TH September 2011 The regatta season started strong, however the numbers of paddlers racing dropped off significantly towards the end of the season. One of the tasks of the incoming committee will be to look at ways to further promote racing in NQ Zone for the 2012 season. The 2011 season also saw a large increase in the number of OC1 & OC2 craft racing at regattas. This is great, and will only strengthen paddling in NQ Zone. With the introduction of a refund for completing the coaching course (within a six month time frame) it has been great to see more qualified coaches through-out most clubs in the zone. A few clinics with expert paddlers where held in the 2011 season. Further clinics (FOC for NQ Zone members) are necessary through the zone, and that will be another challenge facing the 2012 committee. With the decrease in number of paddlers attending the last couple of regattas (Hamo included), I ask that club delegates look outside of their club, and work together for the best outcome for Outrigger canoe racing in North Queensland. We have the best of everything up here, and we need to make sure that we provide for a vast majority of our paddlers with the racing / events that are available. It has been a tiresome year and I would like to thank the clubs for their support through-out the season. Looking forward to a great OC1/OC2 series and some fun racing in 2012.
