2. Written evidence indicates this soldier was mortally wounded and removed from battlefield and died at an undetermined home site or temporary hospital off t
primary battlefield.
3. Hogg: Born January 26, 1846, died in Confederate Hospital in Aberdeen, Mississippi, and interred in the Confederate plot in the city cemetery. Only son of
widow from Calhoun County. The battleflag he was carrying at Brice's Cross roads was captured on July 13, 1864 at Camargo Crossroads by the 14th Wiscons
Volunteers in action preparatory to the Battle of Tupelo. The flag was returned to the Mississippi Dept of Archives & History in 1943.
4. Mortally wounded and died and buried in the vicinity of the Confederate Hospital complex at Lauderdale Springs, near Meridian, Mississippi.
5. Died in Guntown, Mississippi and assumed interred there. From microfilm holdings in Tennessee Archives.
6. Jourdan: Was buried near the Phillip’s House and grave was flanked by cedar trees along the road by friends; they remain there today (1990). The name of t
soldier buried there was passed down by local legend was “Jimmie Jordan”. This was confirmed in Confederate Veteran 1900 page 301: Sam Agnew relat
“J.C. Jourdan, First Sergeant, Moreland’s Battalion, was buried at the Phillip’s House with two cedar trees to mark his resting place”.
7. This grave had a civilian headstone placed by family immediately after war in Bethany Cemetery. Found broken in 1989. May be the only actual grave that t
headstone matches the location of the remains in Bethany Cemetery. This grave was used to align the erection of all the government headstones in 1990. S

10. Bell/Porter: General Bell stated "had a detail bury …Porter……and….staff officer Bell who were mortally wounded near the Brice's House". John Bell was
no known relation to General Bell. He was captain of Co. C, 22 Tenn Infantry and became General Bell's Assistant Inspector General on May 5, 1864, but
was listed as Brigade Acting Assistant Adjutant General on the casualty roll. He was from McLemoresville, Tenn. Lt. Achilles Clark of 20th Tenn Cavalry
reported his friend Porter was found dead by General Bell near the (Brice) house where he was mortally wounded. Porter was a cadet before joining Bell's
staff and was the younger brother of General Bell's friend, Major (and later Tennessee Governor) James D. Porter, Jr.. "A more gallant young man I never
had with me", Bell remarked. Reference: Hughes, Brigadier General Tyree H. Bell, CSA: Forrest's Fighting Lieutenant, 2004.
11. King / Smith: The last Confederate soldiers killed outright on the immediate environs of the battlefield on June 10, 1864 were in vicinity of the Agnew house 2
miles northwest of the crossroads. King was buried “a few hundred yards below the residence, the little mound that marks the grave can be seen on the road sid
He was from Artesia, Mississippi. A.J. Smith was buried a short distance from [King], but site could not be located” in 1895. “[A section of Rice’s Battery too

rammer staff in hand, mortally wounded. His grave now marks the spot where he fell.” Reference: Confederate Veteran, 1900, pg 401, By Samuel Agnew
written March 16, 1895 and Manuscript Diary of Samuel A. Agnew June 1 – 30, 1864. See Note 15. Southern Bivouac 1, No. 12 (1883) “Battle of Tishoming

14. Neely: Remains were taken home to Bolivar, Tennessee in 1864.
15. Rice: Died night of battle in Agnew home. First buried in front of that residence, friends removed his remains to family cemetery in Lauderdale Count
Tennessee in 1865. “A nice young man was brought into my house, died there that night and was buried…in front of my gate. His name was Rice.” Referenc

the Guntown Road. This is known as Hughes or Old Bethel Cemetery and was a family cemetery at the time of the war. A Confederate soldier and fami
