Written evidence indicates this soldier was mortally wounded and removed from battlefield and died at an undetermined home site or temporary hospital off t primary battlefield. 3. Hogg: Born January 26, 1846, died in Confederate Hospital in Aberdeen, Mississippi, and interred in the Confederate plot in the city cemetery. Only son of widow from Calhoun County. The battleflag he was carrying at Brice's Cross roads was captured on July 13, 1864 at Camargo Crossroads by the 14th Wiscons Volunteers in action preparatory to the Battle of Tupelo. The flag was returned to the Mississippi Dept of Archives & History in 1943. 4. Mortally wounded and died and buried in the vicinity of the Confederate Hospital complex at Lauderdale Springs, near Meridian, Mississippi. 5. Died in Guntown, Mississippi and assumed interred there. From microfilm holdings in Tennessee Archives. 6. Jourdan: Was buried near the Phillip’s House and grave was flanked by cedar trees along the road by friends; they remain there today (1990). The name of t soldier buried there was passed down by local legend was “Jimmie Jordan”. This was confirmed in Confederate Veteran 1900 page 301: Sam Agnew relat “J.C. Jourdan, First Sergeant, Moreland’s Battalion, was buried at the Phillip’s House with two cedar trees to mark his resting place”. 7. This grave had a civilian headstone placed by family immediately after war in Bethany Cemetery. Found broken in 1989. May be the only actual grave that t headstone matches the location of the remains in Bethany Cemetery. This grave was used to align the erection of all the government headstones in 1990. S Note 9. 8. Green: Remains removed by his father, John Green of Hopkinsville, Kentucky, in February, 1865 and reinterred in family cemetery at that location. Referenc Civil War News, April 1990, pg 14. 9. Had a circa 1940 Veterans Administration head stone in 1987. May be the actual resting place of this soldIer and used in determining alignment of all marke installed in 1990 per Note 7. 10. Bell/Porter: General Bell stated "had a detail bury …Porter……and….staff officer Bell who were mortally wounded near the Brice's House". John Bell was no known relation to General Bell. He was captain of Co. C, 22 Tenn Infantry and became General Bell's Assistant Inspector General on May 5, 1864, but was listed as Brigade Acting Assistant Adjutant General on the casualty roll. He was from McLemoresville, Tenn. Lt. Achilles Clark of 20th Tenn Cavalry reported his friend Porter was found dead by General Bell near the (Brice) house where he was mortally wounded. Porter was a cadet before joining Bell's staff and was the younger brother of General Bell's friend, Major (and later Tennessee Governor) James D. Porter, Jr.. "A more gallant young man I never had with me", Bell remarked. Reference: Hughes, Brigadier General Tyree H. Bell, CSA: Forrest's Fighting Lieutenant, 2004. 11. King / Smith: The last Confederate soldiers killed outright on the immediate environs of the battlefield on June 10, 1864 were in vicinity of the Agnew house 2 miles northwest of the crossroads. King was buried “a few hundred yards below the residence, the little mound that marks the grave can be seen on the road sid He was from Artesia, Mississippi. A.J. Smith was buried a short distance from [King], but site could not be located” in 1895. “[A section of Rice’s Battery too position] in the road just where the road turns before reaching Dr. Agnew’s house . . . The gallant young soldier, Henry King of Rice’s Battery, fell with h rammer staff in hand, mortally wounded. F, 42d Mississippi Infantry. Reference: History of Chickasaw Coun Miss., pg 476. 14. Neely: Remains were taken home to Bolivar, Tennessee in 1864. 15. Rice: Died night of battle in Agnew home. First buried in front of that residence, friends removed his remains to family cemetery in Lauderdale Count Tennessee in 1865. “A nice young man was brought into my house, died there that night and was buried…in front of my gate. Exum, Turner, Duke, and Cock are buried in a common grave on the property of A.J. Thornton (1990) one mile southeast of the crossroads, 150 yards south the Guntown Road. This is known as Hughes or Old Bethel Cemetery and was a family cemetery at the time of the war. A Confederate soldier and fami member, James Hughes, was buried there when he died of typhoid fever in 1861 when he returned home from service. Reference: Letter from J.H. Gardner: Email communication from Greg Miller, Murray, Kentucky on March 8, 2008 to author: Was mortally wounded and was retrieved after the battle an brought into the Brice’s House. Body was interred in Bethany Cemetery. His brother was also in the battle and wrote to Samuel Agnew. Agnew answered t brother on March 4, 1902 confirming the condition of the graves in the Bethany Cemetery. Reference: Saturday Messenger; Mayfield, Kentucky, June 13, 1903. 18. Walker: Remains removed post-war to Rosehill Cemetery, east of Bethel Springs, McNary County, Tennessee. Reference note to author by John Walker, Beth Springs, Tenn, in 1991. 19. Elcan: Email communication from James M. Elcan on November 14, 2009. During the battle, Thomas Elcan was a horse-holder of the 7th Tennessee. However, was the horse-holders that participated significantly in the pursuit. Thomas was killed about 11 am on June 11 four miles from Ripley by a bullet fired by the 3 Iowa Cavalry. His body was retrieved by his brothers, Joseph John and Herbert Hilliard, and interred in the family plot in Old Trinity Methodist Chur Cemetery near Mason, Tennessee. 20. Smith: See note 11 for reference to Smith. In 2010 a grave marker was placed 60 yards east of King’s along the old road bed as a memorial as exact location grave is unknown. 21. Hardy: Family has momentos of this solider including personal effects sent to them from the Methodist minister of Baldwyn, Mississippi with a note that he h given Hardy a Christian burial on June 12, 1864. Exact location of burial not noted, perhaps in Baldwyn. 22. Confirmed reference buried in Bethany Church Cemetery. 23. Hall: Placed on the Roll of Honor for action at Murfreesboro with the 39th Alabama Infantry 24. Simmons / Wakeland: "Buried in the County Line Church….about 1 1/2 to 2 miles east of the crossroads on the county line between Itawamba & Tishomin Counties.
