Pediatric Committee Heart of Texas Regional Advisory Council (HOTRAC) – TSA M September 1, 2009 Present: Travis Volcik, AEL Marsha Honea, G-W Norma Mathes, HRH Marcy McFarland, Parkview Brittney Misercola, PHI Stat 1 Eldon Taylor, ETMC-EMS Sherry Baker, HBMC Georgenea Duke, LMC Sherry Williams, WMCPHD Tammy Lebkowsky, FCH Tamra Acierni, HBMC Diane Fraley, LMC Teresa Gilliam, PHC The Pediatric Committee met on September 1, 2009. The meeting was called to order by Ms. Baker, Committee Chair, at 11:03am. Ms. Fraley motioned to accept the July 13, 2009 meeting minutes as presented. Ms. Lebkowsky seconded the motion; motion carried. Updates from State Meetings Ms. Baker reported that the National Transportation Safety Board has completed a study on the transfer of critically ill patients. As a result of this survey the GETAC Pediatric Committee has begun reviewing and revising the pediatric equipment guidelines for EMS providers. She also reported that Dell Children’s Hospital has received their trauma designation survey and are awaiting certification from the State. Another update from the GETAC Pediatric Committee included the addition of a liaison to the State CFRT. Board of Directors Nomination A. Pediatric Committee Chair – Ms. Alvey announced that nominations for the Pediatric Committee Chair position are now being accepted. Elections for the position will take place at the December 8 th meeting. B. Pediatric Committee Vice-Chair – Ms. Alvey reported that since Ms. Mersiovsky has stepped down from her position as vice chair, the committee had the option of filling the position for the interim or leaving it vacant until a new vice chair is elected and put in place on January 1, 2010. The committee unanimously decided to leave the position vacant. Nominations for both positions will be taken until the October 31 st deadline. Action and/or Discussion on the following items: A. Pediatric PI Review – Ms. Alvey reported that 2nd quarter Pediatric PI was unavailable for review. She requested that if any of the facilities had not submitted their PI to please do so. Second and 3 rd quarter PI will be reviewed at the next meeting. The committee did request that the EMS indicators relating to pediatrics be provided on the summary form for review. HOTRAC staff agreed. B. Pediatric Injury Prevention 1. Daycare Mail-out – Ms. Alvey reported that the mail-out was ready for distribution. She requested that those who volunteered to help distribute the packets in their county to please stay after to the meeting to receive them. 2. Hooray for Health Update – Ms. Alvey reported that the Hooray for Health Fair is scheduled for October 3, 2009. Currently, volunteers to staff the HOTRAC booth are being requested. An email of the time blocks to be filled will be emailed to the committee. 3. September – Poison Control Month – Ms. Alvey announced that September is Poison Control Month. Several types of brochures from the National Poison Control Center are available at the HOTRAC offices for anyone who would like to distribute them. Ms. McFarland noted that a poison control activity book was being given out in the ER at Parkview. C. Possible Election of Vice-Chair – The committee determined that they would wait until the general elections to fill the vice-chair position. D. RAC Assistance with PI Process – Due to staffing changes at HOTRAC, this item was tabled. E. Trauma System Plan 1. OB EMS Guidelines – This item was tabled due to lack of information. HOT CFRT Update Ms. Alvey reported that the regional CFRT workshop went very well. It was well attended and there was a lot of good information provided. The team is still meeting regularly and attendance is good. Committee Liaison Reports No new updates were provided. However, it was noted that there has been an increase in pediatric strokes in the Region. Other Announcements, Comments, etc. A. RAC Health Fair Participation – Ms. Alvey reported that HOTRAC participated in two injury prevention activities including a health fair in Falls County and the Keller Williams Safety Day at the HOT Fair Grounds. A handout was provided by the KidSafe program about the new booster seat law and a list of car seat check-up events. The next meeting will be on December 8, 2009 at 11:00am, at the HOTRAC offices located at 405 Londonderry, Suite 201 in the Providence Medical Plaza.
