PART 1 - GENERAL

A. Materials, fabrication, installation, and painting of stave constructed wood architectural columns.

1.04
SYSTEM DESCRIPTION
A. Provide architectural columns consisting of capital, column shaft, base molding, and ventilating
plinth.
1.05
SUBMITTALS
A. Provide shop drawings showing profile of columns design and identification number, overall
dimensions, quantity, lumber species, diameter, and finish.
B. Provide manufacturer’s product literature.
C. Provide manufacturer’s installation instructions.
1.06
DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING
A. Deliver columns in manufacturer’s original unopened crates.
B. Store columns in a dry, well ventilated area.
C. Handle columns according to instructions furnished by the manufacturer with the columns.
1.07
WARRANTY
A. Column capital, shaft, base, and plinth are warranted by the manufacturer for one year from date of
installation against defects in material and workmanship.

2.01
MANUFACTURER

2.02
MATERIALS
A. Capitals
1.
Plain ___________ cap (Select from Tuscan, Greek Doric or Roman Doric shown in
brochure) shall be manufactured from fiber reinforced polymers and shall be protected with
sheet lead or copper flashing for exterior application. (Wood capitals turned from the same
wood species as the column shaft are optional.)
2.
Decorative ___________ cap (Select from illustrations shown on back page of brochure)
shall be manufactured from reinforced plaster composition.
Note:
For exterior
applications composition caps require sheet lead or copper flashing.
B. Column Shaft
1.
Exterior column shaft shall be manufactured from _________ (Select from either solid or
finger-jointed redwood or ponderosa pine.) Note: For exterior applications pine columns
are to be treated with a wood preservative.
2.
Interior columns to be painted shall be manufactured from finger-jointed ponderosa pine.
3.
Interior columns to be stained shall be manufactured from solid board ___________
(Species to be selected by architect).
4.
Staves shall be double-V joint pressure bonded with Type-I waterproof adhesive. Note:
for exterior application, bottom edge and 2’ of shaft interior are coated with asphaltum. On
14” and larger columns, entire length of shaft is to be coated.
C. Base Moulding

Exterior bases shall be __________ (Tuscan, Doric, Attic; Note: Greek Doric columns
do not require base) manufactured from fiber reinforced polymers. Cast marble bases and
wood bases turned from the same wood species as the column shaft are optional.

Interior bases shall be ___________ (Tuscan, Doric, Attic) manufactured from fiber
reinforced polymers. Cast marble bases and wood bases turned from the same wood
species as the column shaft are optional.
Plinth

Exterior plinth shall be manufactured from fiber reinforced polymers with built-in
ventilation provided. Note: Exterior columns without plinth require lead plates for
ventilation. Sand cast aluminum plinths are optional.

Interior plinth shall be manufactured fro fiber reinforced polymers with built-in ventilation
provided. Wood plinths from the same wood species as the column shaft are optional.
2.03
FINISHES
A. Columns to be painted shall be factory primed with three coats of an exterior alkyd base primer
hand sanded between coats.
B. Finish painting shall be two coats of oil base paint.
C. Columns to be stained shall be factory machine and hand sanded ready for field staining and
finishing.
PART 3 - EXECUTION
3.01
PREPARATION/INSTALLATION/FINISHING
A. Manufacturer shall provide complete instructions on proper storage, installation, ventilation, and
finishing of columns.
