Answer the following questions in complete sentences:

11. Tropical rain forests have poor soil. How do many species of plants thrive?

Grow in layers, large leaves on the bottom(floor)of the forrest

12. What is a canopy?

Roof on the top of the forrest

13. A temperate deciduous forest has soil that is rich and deep. Why?

Rapid decay of plants and animals and nutrients are returned to the soil

14. What is the advantage of the needle shaped leaves of conifer trees?

Retain water for trees and protects trees against snow.

15. Why are desert soils rich in minerals but poor in organic matter?

No water

16. What does estivate mean?

Animals burrow under the ground during the warm season

17. Why do mosses and lichens grow in the Tundra?

They grow without soil

18.Using the information from the chart on pages 4 –5, identify the biome described:

Temperate

Deciduous forrest

This biome has hot and cold seasons, periodic droughts, and very deep topsoil that is rich in

Temperate rain forrestt desert nutrients.

The soil and plants are similar to biome described above, but the amount of rainfall is greater and there is no cold season.

We tend to think of this biome as being hot, but it may be very cold. Plants must be adapted to store moisture and withstand the drying winds. taiga tundra

Tropical rain

Most rain falls during the short summers in this biome. Plants must tolerate the nutrient poor, acidic soils. Although the soil freezes in the winter, it is not permanently frozen.

Conditions in this biome are even more severe than the biome described above. Only the surface of the soil thaws during the summer.

Seasons are determined by rainfall rather than temperature. Plants grow throughout the year. The soil has few nutrients and becomes hard if exposed to the sun.

Grassland/prairie The biome where you live.
