I.) GENERAL INFORMATION
1. Mill History
The mill was established in the early 1960s by installing 2 world-scale newsprint paper machines with a two-line stone-groundwood pulp mill. The first line, PM1 was put into operation in 1963 and the second line, PM2, in 1968.
In 1970 the company assets were sold to a new owner, who operated the mill until
1988. Then a new company was found by a number of shareholders of which one was a large Italian paper group who became responsible for the management of operations.
The mill continued production until 1991 when it was forced to stop production due to financial problems. In order to avoid bankruptcy and in accordance with Italian laws, the
Ministry of Industry took over the company and since then controlled their activities.
In 1996 the production facilities were leased to a private Italian/Canadian joint venture company, of one of the leading local publishing houses, and a Canadian pulp supplier.
They started production again based on imported bleached CTMP from Canada and own produced stone-groundwood pulp as well as TMP.
In 1997, due to unfavourable development of the US-Dollar and decreasing prices for newsprint the production was stopped again.
In 2002 a complete mill revamping program was started which included a total overhaul of the paper machines as well as the installation of a new waste-paper deinking plant, but financial and organisational problems stopped the project.
Since this time the mill is idle but all the equipment has been kept clean and dry and until 2 years ago, machine drives have been operated frequently to avoid deflection of the machine rolls.
2. Production Facilities
The key production facilities of the mill are the two newsprint machines, from BELOIT, a reputable British/American paper machine supplier. Machine widths are 5.3 and 6.1 m and the practicable production capacity of PM 1 is 260 t/d and of PM 2 app. 300 t/d. The machines were of world-class standard at the time of their construction in 1963 and
1968. Limited rebuild and modernisations have been carried when the machines were in production.
Pulp was supplied from the mill’s own integrated facilities, which were a two-stone ground-wood (SGW) pulp plant, one TMP plant and a re-pulper station with four Hydrapulpers. The pulp mill has been destroyed by a fire in 2003. The steam supply is arranged from two high-pressure fuel-oil boilers with a steam capacity of 100 t/h. Two turbo generators are installed, a condensing back-pressure generator with a power of
20 MW and a back-pressure generator with a power of 5 MW. The power plant is connected to the local public power net via two transformers of 75 and 36 MVA each.
The energy production facili ties are from the 1960’s and their technical condition is moderate. The entire boiler and power house has been sold to a local investor in order to outsource the steam and power supply from the mill in 1996. This investor declared bankruptcy in 1997.
The water supply is arranged by the regional water board. Consumption used to be
1200 m³/h when the whole mill was in operation.
The new biological effluent treatment plant was commissioned in 1997 and is designed for average water flow of 1000 m³/h, which would be sufficient for the operation of the whole plant even after increase of production.
The mill is designed for production of standard newsprint as main grade and also directory paper, mechanical printing paper and supercalandered paper grades.
The quality of newsprint had mainly suffered from the dryness and age of the imported wood raw material and therefore a high percentage of reinforcing chemicals pulp has been used. The present technology of pulp and paper manufacturing at the mill would provide medium quality newsprint as per European quality standards.
The highest practical production recorded in 1984 was 180.000 t/a, when eliminating from the available time the shutdowns due to market restrictions. In 1980 – 88 the practical production capacities varied between 160.000 and 180.000 t/a.
3. Actual Condition of Equipment
Due to the fact, that the equipment was kept in dry and clean condition and because until 2005 the equipment was rotated frequently, the general condition of the equipment is still good. However a general inspection and overhaul is suggested.
