Built new as Southern Pacific #5472; renumbered from 1965-1977 to #3946, reclassed as an
SD9R after being rebuilt as part of the GRIP rebuild program on 5/27/77 renumbered #4423.
Sold to Omnitrax in the summer of 1993. Leased to the county-owned NWP and operated in
a new NWP paint scheme from 1996 until the railroad was shut down by the FRA in
November 1998. Locomotive returned to Omnitrax in 1999 for use on the Great Western
Railway located in Loveland, Colorado until December 2002. Purchased from Omnitrax by
the PLA in December 2003. Moved to Oakland, CA and restored to operation. Locomotive
used to power the move of stored PLA equipment in Oakland to Niles Canyon on Jan 8,

Seating arrangement was modified in 1945, and 1954 and 1959; In 1954 the seats were
replaced with 34 reclining swivel ‘chairs’; In 1959 six rows of chairs were replaced by six
tables. Labeled as an All Day Lunch it was last used in “Sun Tan Special” service, Santa
Cruz, CA; California-Nevada Railroad Historical Society, private owner; On loan to PLA

History:
Built new as Southern Pacific Railroad (SP) coach #2101 for commute service on the
Peninsula between San Jose and San Francisco; Retired in 1985 and sold to the California
State Railroad Museum; acquired from the CSRM in 2004 after years of damage/vandalism
while stored at the ex-SP Sacramento Shop yard. The interior was completely rebuilt by the
PLA while the exterior was repaired by replacing all the windows, fixing rusted sashes and
roof repairs during 2004-2007. In service, Brightside, CA

the big move of Jan 8, 2005. Car converted and currently in use as a generator car with an
added bar and bathrooms for passenger operations. In service, Brightside, CA.

Hicks Locomotive & Car Works (Chicago), January 1907, Coach Observation

First entered service on the Yosemite Valley Railroad on April 1, 1908 with a combination
car and coach also built by Hicks. The car’s last service on the Yosemite Valley was a fan
trip on May 30, 1945. Car was moved to the Yreka Western Railroad and in the late 1940’s
the trucks were removed and car remodeled into a popular restaurant called “The Diner.” In
May of 1986 the car was moved to the City of Yreka Corporation yard where the car was
eventually purchased for $1.00 by Wes and Claudia Swift for restoration. Car moved on
August 24, 1995 to Morgan Hill for restoration including replacement of 3 main stringers,
replacing most of the roof structure, and all the exterior siding. In March of 2005 the car was
moved to Niles Canyon Railway and put back on its trucks. First public operation was during
NCRy Steamfest on March 17, 2007. On May 15, 2007, the car celebrated the Yosemite
Valley Railroad’s 100 year anniversary in the company of the YV 107 RPO/Baggage. In

Originally built by Pullman Company in 1916 as an outside braced boxcar. The Western
Pacific was unable to obtain new cabooses during World War II and rebuilt Sacramento Car
Shops 1943 rebuilt boxcars as cabooses by adding bay windows and end platforms; donated
by Western Pacific Railroad to KQED for a fund raising auction in 1975, purchased by a
resident of Salinas, CA but before the car could be moved was burned by vandals. The
burned car sat on a siding in Salinas until purchased by Sam and Laura Jenkinsen in 1983 to
be restored as an office for their contracting business. Donated to the PLA for preservation
in February, 2000. In service while undergoing restoration, Brightside, CA
