‡
A prelab is due at the beginning of each experiment. A “yes” indicates that a flowchart is also due along with your prelab.

Writing Activities and Assignments are take-home assignments that are due at the start of lab during the week indicated.
Grading for lab work is described in the introduction Section of your Lab Manual. At the end of the semester, the raw total of
all lab points will be adjusted to a total of 200 points. Lab grades will also be normalized across lab sections.
CHEM 116
Fall 2010
WARNING: YOU MUST OBTAIN A PASSING GRADE IN THE LAB PORTION OF THE CLASS TO PASS CHEM 116.
TEXTS AND SUPPLIES
The following materials are required for this laboratory:
1. Organic Chemistry 116-117 Laboratory Manual, 2010-2011 – a JSD-produced laboratory manual that provides
specific instructions for experiments and computer exercises.
2. Padías, A. B. Making the Connections: A How-To Guide for Organic Chemistry Lab Techniques ISBN: 978-07380-1985-7 This is a book of general techniques and laboratory procedures. (Huntley Bookstore)
3. Laboratory notebook with duplicate, tear-out pages. (Huntley Bookstore)
4. Chemical Splash Safety Goggles. Appropriate attire (long pants, closed-toes shoes, etc. - see lab manual) as well
as chemical splash safety goggles or equivalent eyewear (ANSI Z87+ standard compliant) must be worn in the lab
AT ALL TIMES. See Dr. Luft if you need to purchase a new or replacement pair of safety goggles.
WRITTEN WORK
Notebook: It is to be a complete, but brief, narrative outlining procedures and apparatus used, observations made,
and data collected for each experiment. Ultimately, another chemist should be able to reconstruct your experiment
from the information in your laboratory notebook and any references given therein. Your lab notebook will be
graded two times in the semester. All carbon copy sheets must be placed in the official binder before leaving lab.
Prelabs: These are handed in at the beginning of each lab. You may not begin work in the lab until your prelab
has been completed and handed in. The Introduction section of the Organic Chemistry 116-117 Laboratory
Manual presents a general format that is the basis of all prelabs. Some experiments will require slight alternations
to the format, and this is noted in each experiment if necessary. The Laboratory Schedule also indicates all
experiments for which a Flow Chart is required as part of the prelab.
Worksheets: Due dates for all worksheets are listed on the Laboratory Schedule. Worksheets are generally due
before the end of the period of the last week of the experiment.
Late Work: All work will be considered late if not handed in by the end of your regularly scheduled lab period
during the week it is due. Late work is eligible for only 50% credit. No work will be accepted more than one week
late. If an unexpected illness necessitates a late report, a written note from Baxter Medical Center or your
physician must be brought to Jennifer Luft (KSC 227).
Writing Activities and Writing Assignments: You will be assigned three writing activities as well as a larger
writing assignment throughout the semester (see Laboratory Schedule for associated dates). These activities and
assignments will help you familiarize yourself with the format of papers published in a chemistry journal that you
will use to write Formal Reports during Chem 117. Specific instructions will be provided in class.
Quizzes: There will be two quizzes as shown on the Laboratory Schedule in order to assess your understanding of lab
principles, chemistry, and techniques. Quizzes are closed-book (no notebooks, manuals, or techniques books).
Regarding Plagiarism: You will be held to your Institution’s standards and rules on plagiarism as detailed in your
College Catalog. Although many experiments require that you work in pairs or in groups, all written work,
including the presentation of data, is expected to be your own.
ABSENCES FROM LAB
Absences from lab for any reason must be discussed with the laboratory coordinator (Jennifer Luft; KSC 227,
jluft@jsd.claremont.edu, x70924) in advance of the lab being missed. The only acceptable reasons for missing lab
are direct school or sports conflicts, or illness. In the event of an unexpected illness, you must alert Dr. Luft to your
absence by phone or email and provide a note from the Baxter Medical Center or your physician within a week.
MISSING MORE THAN TWO LABS WILL RESULT IN A FAILING GRADE IN CHEM 116. You may
contact Dr. Luft regarding the possibility of rescheduling a missed lab during the same week. Be aware, THERE ARE
NO MAKE-UP LABS. Contact Dr. Luft in case of extended illness, etc.
TARDINESS AND TIMELINESS
Students must complete the experiment within the allotted time, as you cannot work in the lab unattended.
Tardiness will not be tolerated. For specific experiments, the lab will be opened early so that students may dry
glassware, etc. Feel free to arrive early other weeks to prepare for lab. If you arrive late to lab, you will not be allowed
to participate in lab and you will receive zero credit for that week’s lab: this will count as one of the labs you are
allowed to miss before you are given a failing grade in Chem. 116.
LOCKER CHECK-OUT
Failure to check out of your locker by the end of the semester (or earlier if you drop the class) will result in a $20.00
check-out fee. You will be responsible for replacement costs for broken or missing glassware; your check-in list
contains approximate prices. In addition, $30.00 will be charged for any locker key that is not returned.
