OAYO is grateful to the Nebraska Arts Council, Nebraska Cultural Endowment and Iowa West Foundation for their generous support of our work. The Chamber Music Program at OAYO Funding the program 1. Grant application to Chamber Music organizations which offer funding to youth musicians such as the ACMP-The Chamber Music Network. Pending request for underwriting of 36% of the cost of the coaches. 2. Integrated the Chamber Music Program into grant applications submitted to the Nebraska Arts Council, private foundations and funders providing operational support to OAYO. 3. Dedicate support from OAYO operating budget to cover all amounts not underwritten by funders or supported by chamber music tuition. 4. Striving to identify potential funders, partners and best practices to further support and grow a sustainable program. Key program facts The 2014-2015 season marks the 16th year of OAYO’s growth under Ms. Aviva Segall’s artistic leadership as Music Director and Principal Conductor. Developing Chamber musicians and enthusiasts is important to the artistic staff and administration of OAYO. The Chamber Music program is in its 20th year and an integral part of our organizational strategic plan and key to our mission. 15 ensembles containing 63 musicians from ages 9 to 18. In the past 16 years, OAYO developed our chamber music program to include musicians from each of our fourtiered orchestras, professional coaches to instruct and mentor each ensemble individually, and performance opportunities. Our chamber music program started rehearsals on September 28th with 60 musicians in 15 ensembles. Each ensemble is led by a coach who is a professional musician with specific expertise in music education. OAYO is committed to chamber music. Program innovations in the current season – Chamber Ensemble Coordinators. Chamber music ensembles challenge operations and artistic staffing. Coordination of 15 coaches, repertoire, and the staging of rehearsal spaces during a 13-rehearsal period is not a small task. According to our timekeeping, Aviva Segall devoted 25 hours to formulation of the individual ensembles based upon the skill level, instrumentation and available coaches and repertoire. Selection and hiring of coaches required approximately 8 hours and music preparation for the opening of the season another 12 hours. OAYO commits funding from the operations and artistic budgets to address these components. This summarizes only the staffing needs to begin the program and does not include administrative, clerical and accounting support. Coordinators are parents of the musicians whom arrive at the rehearsal early in order to set up the room with chairs, stands, take attendance, and re-set the room following the rehearsal. OAYO chamber musicians rehearsal in classrooms at either Lewis & Clark Middle School or the Strauss Performing Arts Center on the campus of the University of Nebraska at Omaha. Classrooms do not contain music stands and need to be re-set for a traditional class following the rehearsal. The task is time-consuming and important. Coordinators contribute about 1 hour of labor per chamber music ensemble during each weekly rehearsal. OAYO offers a 25% reduction in the chamber music tuition for the service (25% of $235.00 = $58.75). Seven of the fifteen ensembles have Coordinators. The $411.25 in tuition discounts is absorbed by the OAYO operating budget. Parent Coordinators are a huge success and the program will be evaluated and continued next season. Next season – Music for nontraditional chamber groups. In a perfect world, instrumentation and skill levels would be an easy match with available repertoire and the musicians’ schedules. That is not typically the case and unusual instrumentation requires additional repertoire, arranging and organizational work. OAYO is exploring means to increase the chamber music library to meet our focused needs. This progression is dependent upon obtaining financial support. Next season –Summer CM Coordinator and Repertoire Advisor We plan to create a Chamber Music Coordinator opportunity in the form of a need-based tuition scholarship for a parent during the off-season (June and July). The Summer Chamber Music Coordinator would handle clerical and communication aspects of lining up parent Coordinators for the season, confirming ranges of time availability from the musicians, and collecting the more detailed contact information needed from the chamber musicians. The Summer Coordinator would compile the audition information so it could be supplied to a Repertoire Advisor. The Repertoire Advisor would consider the ensemble groupings, the musicians and make recommendations on music selection to the Music Director. Adding these positions to the OAYO chamber music program is essential. We anticipate 14 chamber ensembles for the 2015-2016 season. Let us know what you think can be done to develop and strengthen the program! Guide to the 2015-2016 OAYO Chamber Music Program General Information A chamber music ensemble is a small ensemble without a conductor where every musician is on an individual part. Musicians must listen to each other carefully for balance, articulation, tuning and rhythm. Working as a small group fosters a great amount of confidence and independence while at the same time forms great interpersonal communication and teamwork skills. Our Chamber Music Program consists of ensembles between 4 and 5 musicians. These ensembles are coached by local professional musicians such as members of the Omaha Symphony and UNO faculty. We traditionally offer three types of chamber music ensembles: String Quartet: two violins, one viola, one cello Woodwind Quintet: flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, and horn Brass Quintet: horn, two trumpets, trombone, tuba For our Youth Symphony and Youth Philharmonic Orchestras we offer two string quartets, one woodwind quintet, and one brass quintet. For our Chamber Strings and Youth Conservatory we offer three string quartets for each group. If there is high interest from wind and brass players we may be able to accommodate additional chamber groups, however this depends not only on interest but on other factors such as the availability of instrumentally and ability level appropriate repertoire. Note that should there be interest in forming nontraditional chamber groups students should feel free to approach our Music Director Aviva Segall with their proposal. Ms. Segall will use discretion in approving the groups based on factors that include, but are not limited to, instrumentation, available repertoire, demands on staff, etc. How to indicate your interest in the Chamber Music Program at OAYO Chamber Music is one of the most satisfying musical experiences you can have! OAYO musicians must sign up for consideration in the program by checking the chamber music box on your Audition Application. Below you will find general information about chamber groups and our program, how the selection process works, logistics, and our cancellation policy. Selection Process As our Music Director Aviva Segall listens auditions she will determine where the best fit for each student is in one of our chamber music ensembles. Spots in these ensembles are somewhat competitive given that we will only create additional ensembles if there is appropriate instrumentation. Rehearsals/Logistics All Chamber Music rehearsals are one hour long and will either take place before or after Youth Symphony (at UNO), before Youth Philharmonic (at UNO), or before Youth Conservatory Orchestra (at Lewis and Clark Middle) rehearsals on Sunday afternoons. Blocked off time slots on Sundays include 12:15-1:15pm, 2:15-3:15pm, and 4:45-5:45pm. Additionally there is a rehearsal slot before Youth Chamber Strings Monday evenings from 5:45-6:45pm. Cancellation Policy A lot of work goes into preparing our Chamber Music Ensemble program between our Music Director, our Office Staff, and our Coaches. Important to remember is that by signing up to be in a chamber group you are making a commitment to your colleagues and their musical pursuits and to your coach. If you cannot follow through on your commitment to the Chamber Ensemble Program please let us know as soon as possible but no later than April 30, 2015. If you cancel after this point but before August 1, 2015 you will be charged a $75 fee.
