WORKSHOP OBJECTIVE
Severe soil contamination with metals and organic pollutants occurred at
numerous lands under strong pressure of industry or other human activities. Such
sites are often barren due to contaminant toxicity and other conditions detrimental to
plants such as infertility, acidity, salinity, compaction etc. This leads to further
dispersion of contaminants through wind erosion, leaching and runoff. Remediation
of contaminated soils and wastelands is an urgent need to reduce the impact of
contaminated sites on local environment. Various methods of remediation are known
but the technology must be properly selected for a particular site. Many remediation
actions failed in such extreme environments due to wrong selection of the
remediation method consuming significant funds.
Contamination of agriculturally used soils may lead to excessive transfer of
contaminants to food chain. Such soils also have to be properly managed.
The meeting is aimed to present and discuss recent developments in
remediation of soils and wastelands contaminated with inorganic or organic
contaminants. The proposed topics of the Workshop will include: problem
characterization, procedures for strategy selection, in-situ and ex-situ remediation
techniques, phytoextraction and phytoremediation, management and monitoring of
remediated sites, evaluation of remediation effectiveness, legislation and policy
framework, etc. Attention will be given to examples of practical applications of
remediation techniques.

120 km from Warsaw, 50 km from Lublin and is
easily accessible via public transport.
The workshop will be held in the Institute
of Soil Science and Plant Cultivation in the
beautiful Czartoryski`s Palace and the IUNG

Puławy can be found at www.poland.com.
TRAVEL ARRANGEMENTS:
By Road
Directions and maps of how to find Puławy can be
found by using the website www.pilot.pl. If you are intending
to arrive by car there is parking at the hotel itself.
By coach
We recommend the “Polski Express” coach service.
There are two possible places of departure in Warsaw: bus
stop at ‘Okecie’ airport and bus stop at Al. Jana Pawla II
(situated near the Central Railway station). You should take
a coach direction Lublin. The journey takes about 2 hours.
The ticket is 35 – 40 PLN (1 EURO = 4.00 Polish zloty –
PLN).
For
the
timetable
please
see
http://www.polskiexpress.pl or the end of the document
By train
There are good rail links between Warsaw and
Puławy (station: Puławy Miasto). Trains depart almost
regularly (every hour) and journey from Warsaw (Warszawa
Centralna station) takes a little less than 2 hours. For train
timetables please see the end of the document or
http://rozklad.pkp.pl/bin/query.exe/pn?. IUNG Training Congress Centre (Al. Królewska 17, 24-100 Puławy) is about

at the station (ask fort IUNG hotel or show the driver a sheet
of paper with the address written on it). Taxi driver should
not charge you more than 15 PLN.
By Air
The nearest airport is ‘Okęcie’ airport in Warsaw.
“Polski Express” coach service offers direct connection from the
airport to Puławy. For this mean of transportation see the information
on travelling “By coach” (left) and the timetable of departures at the end
of the document. The bus stop in Puławy is situated about 1 km from
the hotel. You may use taxi (Taxis stop about 100 m from the bus stop)
– the price is about 10 PLN).
To get to Puławy you can also use a train. For this mean of
transportation see the information on travelling “By train” (left) and the
timetable of departures at the end of the document.
To reach Warsaw Central railway station (‘Warszawa Centralna’) from
the airport you should use the bus No. 175 (buy ticket – 2,40 PLN in
the kiosk at the arrival hall; for especially large luggage a passenger
should purchase another ticket; a ticket bought from a bus driver is 3
PLN) or a taxi (we recommend to order it by telephone e.g. +48 22
9626 or +48 22 6516363, then you can be sure that you won’t pay

to communicate in English).
