STATEMENT OF TEACHING PHILOSOPHY
Throughout the years I continue to receive the utmost appreciation from my
students of how much knowledge they acquired from my classes. For instance, I was
astonished and filled with extreme reverence after a Valedictorian student explained to
the audience on how she ascertained from my class a vast amount of financial and
accounting knowledge from a domestic and global perspective. In addition, I have
received numerous comments from students, such as they enjoy reading news from the
NPR, BBC, or the Wall Street Journal. I title these as my Renaissance memories as an
educator. These unforgettable memories empower my personal drive to be diligent with
developing engaging lectures, challenging assessments, positive student goals, and
analytical cooperative projects.
I envisioned learning to be an engaging conversation with professor and students
about the class content. Learning should be fluid so it encourage students to ask questions
and to apply the content to authentic examples, such as case studies. Being that, I make it
a strong effort to learn each of my students’ names, career goals, and learning styles. In
support of this, I facilitate a class learning survey which ask general background
questions, such as family backgrounds, career aspirations, and learning styles. I have
encountered various learning styles from my teaching career such as, auditory, visual, and
tactile learners. Student surveys have provided immediate feedback on the student's
learning styles, studying habits, assessment strengths and weaknesses. Surveys promote
more efficient lecture, classroom discussion, project based learning and assessment
planning. Before I begin the content I will teach and model for the students on how to
construct Cornell and Mind Mapping Notes. Students have shared that Cornell Notes and
Mind Mapping dramatically improve their understanding of the subject matter.
I strongly believe the foundation of success in any learning environment is preparation.
Educators must be strategic and creative to increase the students’ demand for content
knowledge. I have incorporated prior background knowledge assignments for new topic
introductions. The background exercises are for students to assess what they already
know about the topic. For example, my government class was divided into three groups:
consumers, government, and cell phone company. The students were to discuss within
their group the advantages and disadvantages of permitting one government controlled
cell phone provider to monopolize the market. In addition, each group was to focus their
attention only on their assigned group role, and present their findings to the class.
Moreover, I would facilitate a reflection discussion from what was learned from the
group exercises. I used this group exercise to introduce the different types of government.
In my lectures, I have incorporated current news media content to help students to learn
how to critically apply the class content to the assigned news material. Previously, I used
video material from CBS 60 minutes news talk show about the Amazon's supply chain
management to enhance their knowledge of free enterprise. Students were required to
critique each of Amazon’ business departments illustrated in the video and growth
initiatives. The students were divided into groups to develop a consulting firm and to
develop a presentation for Amazon’s Board of Directors. The group presentations were to
devise a plan on how Amazon can reduce costs, increase market share, and identify new
markets. Students have shared how they enjoyed using tactile skills because the
cooperating learning assignments improved their understanding of the material. Further,
I have used the Socratic questioning format to help students expand they conceptual basis
of the class content. I teach and model the various types of Socratic questioning and
students are required to utilize the questions in a class debate or discussions. It is my
responsibility to teach students on how to analyze a concept and examine each layer with
the utmost intellectual precision. I strongly foster a competitive class environment, so
they can experience the competitive nature of our global society. In support of this,
students learn how to work in teams by facilitating cooperative learning assignment.
In conclusion, it is imperative to develop rubrics which are aligned with the
learning objectives. Rubrics assist students with how the assignment will be graded. For
example, students will have a clear understanding on how to accumulate the maximum
amount of points. My rubrics are individually structured for various assignments and
projects. I traditionally use analytical rubrics to individually assess grading criterion. For
example, I have structured rubrics to assess presentations for originality, effectiveness,
sequencing of information, accuracy, graphics, organization, sources and execution. The
different rubric categories encourage students to perform at the highest level. This
information will provide valuable information on where I need to initiate any
modification of the rubric categories, point’s allocation, instructional delivery, exam
format. Further, I may need to use a different instructional strategy to improve the
mastery percentage on the lowest performing learning objective. It is very important to
assess your teaching methods because every educator should hold themselves
accountable to the highest standards. I hold myself accountable to instill insurmountable
amount of knowledge, so my students can achieve intellectual greatness.
