ORGANIC LIQUID SOAP CALCULATIONS
For Soil Association approval and licence of a fully organic preparation the percentage of certified organic ingredients must be 95% or above. Water is excluded from the calculation. For a preparation to be classed having a % Organic Ingredients it must have over 70% certified organic ingredients.
Stephenson Personal Care Organic Liquid Castile Soap is certified as fully organic and has an organic ingredients content of 98.93%. The soap content is taken as 29% for the purposes of this calculation.
Calculation of Organic Content
To calculate the percentage in a finished product the following factors need to be taken into account.
1) Soap Base - How much is in the formula, what the soap strength is and the actual % of organic ingredients
2) Salt Solution - How much is to be added and the strength of the solution
3) Additives (essential oils, fragrances etc) - How much is to be added and their organic status
Example
A hand wash is to be made using 95.5% soap base, 4% salt solution and 0.5% organic additives
Assuming The Soap base is 29% solids and the salt solution is a 25% solution the dry weights in the preparation will be :-
Soap Base
Salt
95.5 x 29/100 = 27.7
4.0 x 25/100 = 1.0
Additives do not change
The % dry weight is calculated by dividing the dry weight of the ingredient by the total of the dry weight
As the Soap base is not 100% Organic the % Organic is 94.86 x 98.93/100 ie 93.85
The percentage organic ingredients are the total of all the percentages in the preparation.
The above is tabulated below.
