Programme Outline
Do you like rainy days? What do you do on rainy days? Have you ever tried singing, playing
and splashing in the rain? How is the world like in the rain? What do you see, smell and do in the
rain? Join the children in the programme and learn about what fun you can have in the rain.
Learning Objectives
1. to develop aesthetic appreciation of a common scene like raining
2. to learn about the vocabulary related to raining and develop phonological awareness e.g.
pitter patter, pitter patter
3. to find out why it rains
Communicative Functions
1. Describe the weather
2. Express likes and dislikes
3. Identify common objects and describe their sizes, shapes and colours
Suggested Activities
1. Motivate the class by asking pupils to describe the weather of the day. Teachers can put up
pictures on the blackboard to show the different weather. Encourage pupils to describe the
weather by using words like: sunny, cloudy, rainy, windy, cold, etc.
2.
3.
4.
Teachers can also ask pupils what kinds of weather they like best. They can also talk about
what they like to do on such days. For example, they like swimming on a sunny day; or they
like flying kites on a windy day.
Teachers then ask pupils what they can do on a rainy day. Teachers ask pupils what they
need to take with them when it is raining. Teachers then introduce to pupils like rain boots,
raincoats, umbrellas, etc.
Pupils complete Copymaster 1 after viewing the programme. Teachers can help pupils
recognise the words in Column A by reading the words aloud to the pupils. In completing
Part 1b, teachers can lead the pupils to read through the passage once to understand its
meaning before filling in the blanks.
Answers: It’s raining today. I take my umbrella, put on my raincoat and rain boots to go out in the
rain. I see a lot of puddles on the street and splash them. The water splashes on my body. I get wet
but it’s really fun. Then it stops raining. The sun shines in the sky. I see a rainbow in the sky. It’s so
beautiful!
5.
6.
Encourage pupils to read the rhymes in Copymaster 2, drawing their attention to the letter p
and its phonic sound. Teachers can replay that segment in the programme and ask pupils to
read along with the actors. In Part 2b, ask pupils to try replacing the letter p with the letter b
and read out the words. This exercise can turn into a phonic game in which pupils try to
replace the first letter with a different consonant and read out the words themselves.
Part 3b is a creative writing exercise in which pupils try to write their poem based on the
model in Part 3a. Pupils can begin by reading the poem given aloud. Teachers can then guide
the pupils by asking them questions like: What do you love to do on a sunny day? Where do
you usually go? What do you take with you?
