Note regarding General Education Requirements
In order to have a course designated to fulfill one or more General Education requirement, instructors must submit a syllabus (or full course description) along with a
Request Form for each requirement, indicating how the course addresses the guidelines passed by the faculty. No course may satisfy more than two General Education requirements. Perspective course instructors are encouraged to incorporate
Convocations and other experiences when these are pertinent to the subject of study.
AAAW Perspective Description
The African Americans’, Appalachians’, Women’s Perspective is intended to help students develop an understanding and appreciation of diversity through the study of one or more of those groups central to Berea’s Commitments: African Americans,
Appalachians, and/or Women.
Student Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of any course meeting the African Americans’, Appalachians’, Women’s
Perspective, a successful student will:
 know and appreciate cultural contributions, perspectives, and/or experiences of one or more of the groups emphasized in Berea College’s historic commitments:
African Americans, Appalachians, and/or women;
 understand how mechanisms of institutionalization, privilege, power, and cultural stereotyping affect African Americans, Appalachians, and/or women, and how these groups have resisted patterns of domination;
 reflect upon her or his own identity and place within a diverse society;
 be able to access and evaluate resources by and about African Americans,
Appalachians, and/or women.

Guidelines for Approving Courses for the African Americans’, Appalachians’, Women’s
Perspective
AAAW Perspective courses should address the student learning outcomes listed above and must:
1.
have as a central focus the contributions, perspectives, and experiences of one or more of the groups emphasized in Berea College’s historic commitments: African Americans,
Appalachians, and/or women;
2.
acquaint students with primary sources and scholarship regarding African American,
Appalachian, and/or Women’s Studies, and introduce resources available in Hutchins
Library, including, when appropriate, Special Collections materials;
3.
include thinking critically about historical, political, social and/or economic constructions of race, regionalism, or gender and about stereotypes, assumptions, and biases regarding
African Americans, Appalachians or women;
4.
attend to efforts of African Americans, Appalachians, and/or women to resist and transform oppressive assumptions and institutions;
5.
clearly addresses some of the skills and habits of mind listed in the Aims for General
Education.
