ROM SIRES AND DAMS
Objectives:
To acquaint members with the outstanding dogs and bitches who reached the level of
Register of Merit Award from the American Shetland Sheepdog Association.
Points to cover
1 What does Register of Merit mean?
ROM is awarded to a male sheltie that has sired 10 or more champions
ROM is awarded to a female sheltie that has been the dam of 5 or more
Champions.
2. What designates the award?
The ASSA awards a triangular pin for this award. The triangular achievement
Pin covers ROMS, Century Club winners (100 or more Best of Breed wins)
OTCH+3 and CH+VCX winners. Only ASSA member can receive the pin.
3. Discussion about the value of ROM Shelties to the breed.
Activity:
Preparation: Prepare two teams packets (or more if the club is large). Each packet
contains pictures of 20 ROM Shelties, 3 pictures to a page with a series of lines to the
right for responses.
Part 1. Members in attendance are lined up from highest number of years in the breed to
lowest number. Count out by two to make two teams. Each team is given a packet and
separated to work on identifying each dog. After about ten minutes, the two packets are
turned in for quick scoring. (See attached page). The team gets a piece of candy or some
marker for each correct dog.
Part 2. The teams are given a list of dogs and sent back to try and match names to
pictures. The packets are then scored orally. Again, candy/markers are given for each
additional dog correctly identified.
Part 3. Each team is given one die. Team 1 rolls the die and has to answer a trivia
question about the dog matching that number. (This part does require some preparation
on the presenter’s part. Questions included can be year of birth within a range of years or
how many Champions they produced or what their call name was, etc.) Team 2 than does
the same. Candy/markers are given for correct answers.
For the next round that number is added to the previous number to get the new dog. No
dog is used more than once. Continue until all 20 dogs are used to answer a question.
The team with the highest number of pieces of candy wins and gets the other teams
candy. If using markers have some other kind of prize for the winning team.
Home activity: Look up the list of ROM in an ASSA Handbook and see if any appear in
your dog’s pedigree.
