Mr Coe, who was in his 90th year, had resided in Mellsop Avenue, Waiuku, for the past twenty years and was respected by all who knew him. His had been a highly adventurous life and many were the stirring tales and personal Page 2 Family History Report reminiscences he could tell of the Maori Wars in the Waikato and Taranaki, and of the Maori Leader, Te Kooti. Mr Coe was born in Hobart, Tasmania, in 1849 and came with his parents to Auckland when he was 2 years old.Mr Coe at an early age assisted his father in one of Aucklands first butchery businesses but, on his father's death a few years before the commencement of the war in the Waikato, and while still a lad, though well grown and of an adventurous disposition, made his home amongst the Maoris of the Waikato and Taranaki districts. He aquired a perfect mastery of the Maori tongue, an accomplishment that served him in later life as a first grade interpreter. During the course of his sojourn amongst the Maoris he made the aquaintance of such notable figures as the Maori King, Potatau, Te Kooti, Waharoa, Wiremu, Tamehana and Von Tempsky. He was in fact "Adopted" at one stage by Te Kooti , who was many years later to become such a terror to the early settlers. About 1870 Mr Coe's inclination led him to follow the call of the sea and for a number of years he was engaged in the New Zealand coastal trade, with the occasional trips to the South Sea Islands. During the adventurous years of the gold rushes at Thames and Coromandel ports. He was engaged in sailing his own ketch between Auckland and the Coromandel ports. He later settled down in the Waikato and King Country districts, in 1878 marrying his present wife, then Miss Sophie Moore. Until about twenty years ago, when he returned to Waiuku, he was a well known figure in the Waikato and King Country, a friend to both Maori and pakeha and on many occassions acting as interpreter before the Native Land Court. He is survived by his wife and eight children Mesdames Porter and Gibson (Auckland) , Patterson (Waiuku) and Messers William Coe (Rotorua) Jack and Dan Coe (Te Awamutu), Jim and Ernie Coe (Waiuku).
