He was born in Almerode, Zip 3432, West Germany, in 1750-51. He was wounded and captured at the Battle of Trenton on 26 Dec. 1776, having served in Co. 1 of the Rall Regt. After the Battle he was moved to Philadelphia. I have no knowledge of what happened to him until December 1780, which is four years later. He may have been moved to Lancaster, Pa. with the other Trenton POWs and then to Winchester, Va. in Aug-Sept. 1777, and from there to Frederick, MD. Or, he may have gone directly to Frederick from Philadelphia at the time the British occupied Philadelphia in the fall of 1777. At any rate, on 18 December 1780 he was transferred from Frederick, Md. to the Goal at Philadelphia. He apparently spent the next 16 months in the vicinity of Philadelphia or in the Goal itself. Then on 17 April, 1782, he was "farmed out" to work on Mr. BOnd's Plantation in the vicinity of Philadelphia. Two weeks later on 29 April, "he ran waay". It would seem logical that th returned to Maryland, where he had spent some time as a POW. John William Hoffmaster (George Hofmeister, Sr., Franz Hoffmeister, Unknown) was born 15 Feb 1827 in , , Virginia, and died 13 Jan 1909 in , , Virginia. He married Rebecca Kirk 22 Dec 1852 in Jefferson, Virginia, daughter of Charles Kirk. She was born 04 Mar 1826 in , , Virginia, and died 16 Feb 1898. Notes for John William Hoffmaster: OHN W. HOFFMASTER, an intelligent and enterprising farmer carrying on operations in his chosen calling in Thayer township, York county, Nebraska, is a native of Maryland, born February 17, 1827, at Pleasant Valley, Washington county, and is a son of George and Elizabeth (Eckle) Hoffmaster, who were also born in that county. From there they removed to Pennsylvania, and in 1840 went to West Virginia, settling near Charlestown, where they spent their last days. By trade the father was an iron worker, but also followed the occupation of farming. The subject of this sketch is the eldest in a family of nine children--six sons and three daughters--and accompanied his parents on their removal to Pennsylvania, where he was reared and educated. In early life he was employed as overseer on a farm in Virginia until the outbreak of the Civil war, when he joined the Confederate army, enlisting in the fall of 1861 in Company B, Twelfth Virginia Cavalry, and serving under General Jones and General Rosser. He was in many important engagements in Virginia and around Richmond but fortunately he was never wounded. Just before the close of the war he was captured by the Federal troops and held a prisoner until hostilities ceased. He continued to make his home in Virginia until 1881, when he came to York county, Nebraska, and purchased a tract of railroad land in Thayer township, to the cultivation and improvement of which he has since devoted his energies. The well-tilled fields and neat and thrifty appearance of the place testifies to his skill and ability in his chosen calling, and also to his perseverance and good management. Mr. Hoffmaster was married in Virginia, in 1852, to Miss Rebecca Kirk, a native of the Old Dominion, and a daughter of Charles Kirk. Six children were born to them, of whom three are still living, as follows: Horace W., William J. and Laura. The wife and mother was called to her final rest February 1, 1898. She was an earnest and consistent member of the Methodist Episcopal church, with which Mr. Hoffmaster and his children are also connected. In politics he is a Populist, and has most faithfully served his fellow citizens in the capacity of justice of the peace and as a member of the school board. During the seventeen years of his residence in York county, he has made a host of warm personal friends, and gained the confidence and esteem of all with whom he has come in contact From: Memorial and Biographical Record .... Horace William Hoffmaster (John William, George Hofmeister, Sr., Franz Hoffmeister, Unknown) was born 17 Sep 1853 in , Frederick, Virginia, and died 28 Apr 1929. He married Alice Olivia Albin 15 Sep 1882 in , Frederick, Virginia. She was born 23 Apr 1858, and died 13 Mar 1930. Notes for Horace William Hoffmaster: YORK COUNTY NEBRASKA OLD SETTLER'S HISTORY H. W. Hoffmaster H. W. Hoffmaster was born in Jefferson County, Virginia, September 17th, 1853. He remained with his parents until the spring of 1876. His father, John W. Hoffmaster, who died in Benedict some years ago, was in the Confederate army, under the great chieftain, Stonewall Jackson, and so it was that the young Horace saw much of the movements of the two armies in the Valley of Virginia. First the Grey and then the Blue, would sweep up the Shenandoah Valley leaving death and destruction in its wake. Mr. Hoffmaster came west to Ogle County, Illinois in the year 1876, where he stayed but three years, coming to (147) York County, Nebraska in 1879. Here he purchased 80 acres of land on the southwest quarter of section 20 T. 12 N. Range 2, W. now lying in Thayer township. In 1882 he returned to his old Virginia home and brought away his bride, in the person of an old-time schoolmate. Miss Alice O. Albin, and here he has lived happily ever since. In 1897 he sold his farm and bought the residence of S. P. Striker in Benedict, and has been one of the prominent figures in this community for the past sixteen years. In earlier years among us, he was a thresher, and is credited with having consumed more tough old chickens than any other man in the county, and always seemed to thrive on the diet. He has lived to see the old sod-house disappear, and the land increase in value from $5.00 an acre to $200.00 an acre . This he considers to be the most wonderful thing in his experience in this state. He has a family of six grown children, having lost two in infancy. And here it is no more than just to him that we should say that he has reared as nice and respectable lot of young people as is to be found anywhere. As long as he lived on the farm, he was kept in the office of school director. In the great McKiegan year he made the political mistake of his life running on the republican ticket for supervisor of Thayer Tp. After the ballots were counted, it did not appear that he had been running so you could notice it. For two years he had the key to the strongbox holding the cash belonging to Morton Township, and will likely hold this position as long as he cares to. Like all good men he has one weakness -- he does love a good joke, and there is never a day passes over his bead that he does not rake up something to be used in keeping his old neighbor, the P. M. in mind that H. W. Hoffmaster is yet among the living. Hoffmaster: Article - Washington Post - 22 June 1910 DOUBT MURDER THEORY Mrs. Grice's Parents Believe She is in Hiding Letter Bears Her Name Mailed from Harrisburg to a Girl Friend at Home - Husband, In Lancaster Jail on Suspicion of Having Hilled Her and Two-Week-Old Baby, Is Reticent After Contradictory Statements. Sharpsburg, Md., June 21 - It was currently reported here today that a girl of this place, a friend of Mrs. Grice, whose mysterious disappearance puzzles the Lancaster police to such a degree that they have arrested her husband, J. Cleveland Grice, the Millersville Normal School senior, on suspicion of having murdered her and her 2-week-old baby, had received a letter from Mrs. Grice asking that her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Dorsey, of this city, not be motated of her whereabouts. The letter, it was said, was mailed from Harrisburg. Mrs Grice's relatives believe that she is in hiding in that city, and that Grice has no knowledge of her whereabouts. Charles Hoffmaster, cousin of Grice, who whent to Lancaster upon the solicitation of Grice's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Peter Grice, has returned, but refused to talk about the mystery. It is reported that he told several close friends that he had not been allowed to see Grice. Hoffmaster left Sharpsburg today for Harrisburg, which confirms the report that JMrs. Grice is in hiding in that city. More About Sarah V. J. THE HOFMEISTER - HUFFMASTER FAMILY Three Hofmeister sons from Wurtenberg, Germany came to New York in the United States of America around 1835. One of the brothers remained in New York whereV it is rumored, he became quite;wealthy. The other two brothers wanted to look over their new country before they settled down. The travelers got as far south as Alabama when the third and youngest brother fell in love with a young lady that he met there. He decided that he had traveled enough. Twenty-seven year old Charles Hofmeister (b. 1815) and Mis Vica "Vicie" McLendon (b. 1822) were married near Centerville, Bibb County, Alabama, on November 7, 1842. Leaving the love-birds, the second brother continued with his travels. He finally stopped and settled near Houston, Texas. Charles Hofmeister had learned the shoemaking trade and was a cobbler. Soon after they were married the couple went to Mobile, Alabama, to make their home. Perhaps Charles thought that he would have more work in a larger place, but for whatever reason, they went to Mobile and were living • there where all six of their children were bom. Some of Charles' descendants say that Charles and his brother from Texas both fought in the Civil War .arid that i his brother was killed. Charles came through the war with no injuries, as far as we know. 'Five years after the war hé and Vica-appear"in the 1870 Lauderdale County, Mississippi"census, living near Obedian in Beat 3. Charles was then 55 years old and had Americanized his name to Hofmaster. He gave his birthplace as Wurtenberg. It must have been soon after 1870 that Charles went to'Mobile on a bus-' iness trip. It may have been that he went to check on the reconstuction problems there,■following the war. 'There'was lawlessness and rioting in most of the towns and in many places the streets were not safe., Could be that:they wanted to return to their home in Mobile and he was going to see if conditions were improved. His family never saw him again. Vicie waited and watched for him, but he never came back. In about two months after he left, a gentleman came by their home and asked the family what Hofmaster had looked like. They described him and the man shook his head. "Yes," he said, "That was him that I saw." The man said that he had found Charles' body beside the railroad tracks down near Enterprise in Clark County, Mississippi, and had buried him. He had been.waylaid by some assassin, apparently, but the family never did find out what happened. Vicie and her three unmarried sons moved up to Kemper County where they lived on a farm near Prismatic. Two of the Hofmaster boys never did marry. These two and the Mother are said to be buried at Bethel Church Cemetery in Kemper County. The graves are unmarked. Charles' and Vica's six children were: § 1. FLORAN PINKNEY HOFMASTER.. 1845-1887. Hofmaster was the oldest child of Charles and Vica Hofmaster, he was born In Mobile in 1845 where his dad was a shoemaker. The family moved to Lauderdale County, Mississippi at about the time of the Civil War, apparently staying there until the war had ended. -Arx3uncUl&Z0-,^Floranjmt^and^ was called 'Pat', and they were married. They lived in Kemper a while but later moved to Neshoba County where it is believed Floran bought a farm. They lived in Neshoba County the rest of their lives, and raised their seven children there. Floran died in Neshoba County in 1887 and was buried in the Golden Grve Cemetery. Pat (b.1852) died in 1937 and is buried beside Floran. Their oldest son, Lewis, came to Pine Springs about 1805-6. Children: I. LEWIS JASPER HUFFMASTER Born: 1874, Kemper Co, Miss. Died: 1839,bur. Rose Hill Cem, Meridian MarriedV Allie Rebecca Miller (1880-1960) A farmer, Lewis Huffmaster never seemed to care much for owning his own land. Perhaps he liked to farm but thought it was too much bother to be a landowner. He married in 1896 and he and his wife lived about the area where he worked on various farms. He worked for a gentleman named Pinkston for a time, but around 1906 he came to Pine Springs to work for Sam (H.) Bozeman. Sam Bozeman had bought the 80 acres,: which was" the south half"'of the southeast quarter-: of ;"" Section 9, ,"from_TJoe: Wright.: in.; 1905. Sam had borrowed money to pay for the land from Mr. G.B.Barr. Lewis and Allie lived in a little house that was on the place while Lewis put in a crop. They did pretty good that year and Bozeman had asked him to stay on again for the coming year. Sam mortgaged the 80 acres to Mr. Barr again in January of 1907. That August, Sam Bozeman died. Mr. Barr foreclosed on the land the following year and took it over. Barr didn't really want the land, he was more interested in getting back the money that he had loaned. He tried to get Huffmaster fo: buy the farm, but Huffmaster didn't want it, either. It was hard times for farmers then and Lewis may have felt that there was no need to own land and have to worry about payments arid taxes and getting crop liens when he was doing as well without all that: worry. Looking about at the farmers in Pine Springs that owned their land, he could see that he was doing about as well as they were. He told Barr that he would stay on and farm on shares, but he didn't want to buy. The Huffmasters continued on in Pine Springs for several years and became a part of the community. They had four children who were born in Kemper County before they came and they added two more to their little brood while they lived there. The children attended Pine Springs School and one daughter married a local son while they were there. They took part in the local picnics, egg-hunts, revival meetings that the community enjoyed for recreation. In 1910, G.W.Barr must have finally talked Lewis Huffmaster into buying the 80 acres. Probablv had an unusually good crop that year. Lewis bought the farm but Sold it in 1912, two years later, "to DvCHull,: Page 3 Huf fmaster/pg.3 the Superintendant of Education that lived in Meridian. The Huffmasters did not stay long in Pine Springs after that. They worked the place for Hull until 1915, when Mr. E. L. Harris (Pat) bought it to make a home for his bride, Miss Pearl Bozeman. : : : : :Tt is not known where Lewisi and ■-.-Al lie Huffmaster lived after they moved away from the community. Died: 1936 Married: Cora Edna Glass Children: HUFFMASTER, WM., was born about 1800, either in Germany or immediately after the arrival of his mother in Virginia, his father having died in Germany. The widow married a man named Sawyers, had two children, and he died, and she married Henry Brown, and moved from St. Clair to Sangamon county, as early as March, 1819, and settled at the north side of Lick creek, in Loami township. William had a sister, Lucinda. They came with Mr. Brown, their stepfather, to Lick creek, and while he went back after another load of goods, Huffmaster cut logs, built a cabin, and had it ready for the family when Mr. Brown returned. He had also made a trough, placed it in the cabin, cut down bee trees, and filled the trough with honey. When John Campbell came and settled at the south side of Lick creek, he thought himself the first settler, but hearing the sound of an axe, he went over and found that Huffmaster had been there before him. After more settlers came in, Huffmaster was in the woods with Samuel Harbour, and they found a panther up a tree. Harbour went for a gun, and the panther came down. Huffmaster urged on the dogs, and securing a large club, went to their assistance, and when Harbour returned, to his surprise, found the panther stretched out dead with Huffmaster and the dogs standing around it. Huffmaster's powers of endurance were remarkable. It is well attested that he split 700 rails in one day. He was married, about 1821, to Clarissa Smith, who was born in Kentucky, and came with her parents to Sangamon county, about 1820. They had eleven children-SARAH, born Sept. 4, 1823, married in 1844 to Asa Morris. They have several children, and live in Missouri. Their son, Mayhew Morris; lives near Loami. ELIZABETH, born Nov. 8, 1824, married Brice R. Weir, had two children, and she died. Their daughter, SUSAN, married Jesse Dodd, and lives in Chatham township. JANE married Lawrence Underwood, and lives in Loami township. EDMUND, born April 26, 1827, married Elizabeth Colburn, and for a second wife married Susan Parker, and lives in California. WILLIAM, Jun., born Dec. 9, 1829, married in 1848 to Emeline Colburn, and had two children. IRA W. lives at Loami. PAUL E. is a member of Co. B, 16th U. S. Inf.--1873. Mrs. Emeline Huffmaster died in 1854, and he married Achsa Underwood, have several children, and reside near Owanaco, Christian county, Illinois. DAVID, born Feb. 17, 1831, married Adelia Parker, had one child, and Mrs. Huffmaster died in Sangamon county. Mr. H. started to California overland, in 1856, and lost his life in a singular manner. He was playing with a favorite dog, while holding a gun in his hand. The dog struck the hammer and the gun went off, lodging the charge in the shoulder of Mr. H., causing his death in a few days. His daughter, LYDIA, is now in California--1873. LUCINDA, born June 15, 1832, married Daniel W. Colburn. See his name. MARY, born June 12, 1834, married James Davis, had two children, and she died. Her sons, ADIN and SIDNEY, live in Loami. JOHN, born May 21, 1836, married, Jan. 4, 1866, to Mary Davis. They have four children, FRANK, EZRA, WALTER and LUCY, and live near Loami. NANCY A., born May 26, 1838, married Ebenezer Colburn. See his name. ROBERT, born Nov. 31, 1842, lives in Loami. DANIEL, born Nov. 21, 1844, enlisted in 1861, in Co. C, 11th Mo. Inf., for three years, and died in the army, March 8, 1862. William Huffmaster died Oct. 19, 1861, and his widow died Sept. 23, 1866, both at Loami. Chiefly a record of some of the descendants of Gottlieb Hoffmeister. He was born ca. 1757 near Frankfort on the Main in Germany. He immigrated to America ca. 1776 and settled in Shenandoah County, Virginia. He changed his name to Godlove Huffmaster. He married 12 Jun 1781 to Sarah Louderback. She was bor 18 Feb 1764 in Virginia. Both he and his wife died ca. 1844 in Hawkins County, Tennessee where he had bought land in 1810. They were the parents of ten children. I understand that he came to America around 1830 with two older brothers. One settled in Pennsylvania, one in Texas, and Charles O. Hofmeister in New York and eventually to Georgia. It is supposed that these brothers came from Hamburg or Wurttemburg though not with any certainty. In any event my search continues. I would appreciate any information available that might connect to these men.
