All poster presenters and other staff will be encouraged to attend these sessions. Researchers are not required to stand by your poster during judging, several will be selected and researchers will be required to speak to their research on Thursday morning 17 October. You will be advised as soon as possible once the Symposium has begun if you will be required to present. 7 Submission guidelines Only abstracts which meet the following guidelines will be accepted. This study examined the effect of two ANTIINFLAMMATORY strategies, high-dose methylprednisolone or leukocyte depletion filters, on the immunoinflammatory cascade, gastric mucosal pH (pHi) and intestinal hyperpermeability in these patients. METHODS: Forty patients undergoing elective CPB were assigned in a prospective randomised fashion into one of four groups: control, steroids, leukocyte depletion, steroids and leukocyte depletion. Intestinal permeability was assessed using 51Cr-EDTA as a marker. PHi was determined at fixed times during and after CPB using gastric tonometry. Plasma concentrations of elastase, endotoxin and von Willebrand’s factor (vWF), and neutrophil expression of CD11b were assayed. RESULTS: Intestinal permeability was not affected by either methylprednisolone or leucocyte depletion separately or in combination. Methylprednisolone prolonged the median duration of gastric mucosal acidosis by 246 mins (p=0.042), and reduced the lowest median pHi value by 0.064 pH units (p= 0.006). Methylprednisolone was also associated with a reduction in peak neutrophil elastase concentration of 23.4% (p=0.048). Leukocyte depletion filters had no effect on the pHi or on the elastase concentrations. There were no differences between the 4 groups with regard to endotoxinaemia, vWF and CD11b markers. CONCLUSIONS: Steroids increase the severity and duration of gastric intramucosal acidosis during CPB, despite reducing neutrophil elastase production. This study negates the hypothesis that gut hyper-permeability and intramucosal acidosis during CPB are a consequence of leukocyte activation. 9 Prizes and awards Categorical awards The winning entry in the following categories will be awarded $1000 plus a certificate: Clinical science oral and poster Basic science oral and poster Clinical, Education or Health Services oral and poster.
