NATURE OF AGENCY
CHOC serves much of Southern California as it is Orange County’s only medical facility
solely devoted to the care of children and their families. Founded in 1964, CHOC is a
tertiary care facility with a 232-bed capacity and a medical staff of over 500 physicians.
Virtually every pediatric subspecialty is offered here: Allergy, cardiology, endocrinology,
gastroenterology, hematology, infectious disease, neonatology, nephrology, neurology,
oncology, pulmonary medicine, and rheumatology. Most surgical specialties are also
available. CHOC also has a pediatrics residency program. CHOC Children’s and the
University of California, Irvine Medical School recently signed an affiliation agreement
and starting in 2009, the majority of pediatric care for both facilities will take place at
CHOC.
Since opening its doors in 1964, CHOC Children’s has provided the highest quality
medical care to children. Our regional health system includes a state-of-the-art main
hospital facility in the City of Orange, a hospital-within-a hospital in Mission Viejo, and
five community clinics — plus over 100 additional programs and services. With
admissions growing by 90% over the last eight years, CHOC and CHOC at Mission
combined rank as the 15th busiest children’s hospital in the country. To better
accommodate the growing needs of our community’s children, CHOC is building a new
state-of-the-art patient care tower set to open on our main campus in 2013. When
completed, the new CHOC Children’s Hospital will feature pediatric surgical suites and
related services, emergency, laboratory, pathology, imaging and radiology services, as
well as private rooms, a dynamic and family-friendly lobby, inviting outdoor gardens, a
café and more.
CHOC is dedicated to providing the highest quality pediatric health care as well as
offering specialized programs and services to meet the unique needs of children and
their families.

POPULATION SERVED
This training experience is designed to give practicum student introductory training in
the area of pediatric psychology in a multidisciplinary hospital setting with a specific
emphasis on Endocrinology. The Department of Pediatric Psychology‘s primary goal is
to improve the quality of life and level of adaptation of medically fragile children,
adolescents and their families. Members of the department work closely with
physicians, nurses, and other professionals to assist children and their families with
those behavioral, emotional, social and family issues that impair their physical health.
DIRECT/INDIRECT SERVICES
The trainee will learn to competently provide psychotherapy in Spanish and provide
culturally competent care to Latino children and their families. S/he will gain exposure to
psychological issues facing Latino children and their families and will be trained to
evaluate, diagnose and treat psychological disorders presenting in outpatient clinic. The
trainee will also become familiar with a variety of therapeutic approaches to address the
psychological issues facing Latino children and their families. The trainee will also
develop familiarity with community resources available to families with regards to
advocacy and support. Additional experiences in specialty area of interest may be
obtained, if applicable and will be determined after discussing with your supervisor.
Additionally, the student will carry 8-10 outpatient cases. This cases range from general
child clinical concerns (e.g., ADHD, depression, oppositional behavior) to issues related
to a chronic illness (e.g., adjustment to illness, medical non-compliance, pain and
anxiety). Outpatient services are primarily provided in individual and family therapy
modalities. Treatment normally involves the child or teenager and parents and may
involve the whole family. The trainee will also have an opportunity to gain diagnostic
skills by conducting comprehensive intakes (2 per week) on new patients to the
Pediatric Psychology Outpatient clinic.
Indirect services: case management, and/or advocacy for the family with schools.
Student will also participated in a number of training experiences including individual
and group supervision, Pediatric Psychology seminar, and Spanish-speaking
supervision group.
THEORETICAL ORIENTATION

independently with supervision. The primary supervisors are always on site as are other
licensed psychologists. Progression from one level to another will depend on the
trainee. However, students are expected to come with advanced training, as working

with a pediatric population in a children’s hospital is likely to be a unique and new
