Celebrate like a Prince

All museums in Innsbruck offer fun and action for children

Ambras Castle, the Tyrolean State Museums, the Imperial Palace as well as the

Austrian Alpine Club Museum offer special programs for children and adults alike. For that reason, visiting these art-mindedness places makes it possible to have a very close experience of culture and history while being an artist or slipping into the role of a historical character for a couple of hours.

Stories from History : that is the motto of the guided tours for children offered at

Ambras Castle, with ever tour being dedicated to a different subject. Tours are available every Saturday at 2:30 p.m. all year round.

What kind of people were allowed to wear armors, and on which occasion did they wear them? How were armors made? These and other questions will be answered during a tour with the title “ Rund um den Harnisch ” ( everything about the armor ).

The tour takes children aged 5 to 8 through the armory, where they will learn interesting facts about specific parts of the armor, and at the end of the tour they may even try it on. In addition, kindergarten children will enjoy the tour “ Wir sind Helden ”

( we are heroes ) that also deals with the life of knights. “ Foul ” - the knight’s fear of a

penalty ” informs primary school kids and teenagers about the rules of an athletic competition, and finally “ Feldzug oder Hochzeit ” ( crusade or wedding?

”) deals with the question, whether the Habsburg Family was able to implement their claim to power by means of wars or weddings?

The guided tour s “ Kleider machen Leute ” ( fine feathers make the birds ) and

“ Leben wie ein Fürst” ( living like a prince ) tell you everything about daily life at

Ambras Castle 400 years ago. A walk through the castle allows children from 6 onwards to find out many things about e.g. dressing styles and food of that particular era, or what kind of work people had and what they did in their leisure time – and still, there is a lot more to explore. A puppet theater for children aged 5 to 7 is called

“ Ferdinands Fest ” ( Ferdinand ’s Festival ); it perfectly illustrates how Ferdinand II and his wife Philippine Welser celebrated festivals at that time.

In the Renaissance era people showed great interest in nature and newly discovered religions. They concentrated on the ancient world, its mythology and arts and they wanted to learn everything about the new countries that had been discovered. In this respect, Ambras Castle is a special place, as it bears witness to the time when people discovered nature and civilizations of foreign countries as well as historical and mythological figures. You will hear about all that in the guided tours “ Zeus, Hercules and Co ” and “ Fabelhafte Tiere ” ( fabulous animals ) .

Apart from that, there is another exciting tour: “ Wunderwelt der Renaissance ” ( the magic world of Renaissance ) takes you through the “ Kunst- und Wunderkammer ” ( chamber of art and miracles ) where you will discover exotic pieces of art, miracles of nature, curiosities and precious items. In the same rooms you can also enjoy an exciting

“ Kunstkammerquiz ” which gives you an insight into the mysterious items collected by

Archduke Ferdinand II.

The following tours for groups of children are available on request in English and

Italian for EUR 3 per child: “Rund um den Harnisch”, “Leben wie ein Fürst” und

“Wunderwelt der Renaissance“. Free admission to the castle is granted to children and young people under the age of 19.

Apart from special programs and guided tours for kindergarten groups and schools, the Tyrolean State Museums also offer family tours on a monthly basis, where you can listen to stories about history, arts, archeology and cultural history. The workshops for children up to 12, called “ Kinderwerkstatt ”, also takes place once a month alternately in the Zeughaus, Tiroler Volkskunstmuseum and Tiroler

Landesmuseum Ferdinandeum. The subjects of these workshops vary a lot: e.g. depending on the season, the workshop aims at animals on mountain pastures,

Christmas decoration and many other things which are of interest inside and outside the museum. Moreover, future artists and enthusiastic hobby painters have the opportunity to find out about particular arts topics or specific painting techniques in the

“ Offenes Atelier ” ( open studio) . This kind of program is suitable for all ages and demonstrates how famous local artists such as Richard Gerstl, Hubert Prachensky or

Erika Giovanna Kein were able to create colorful masterpieces that can be admired in the museums today.
