Associate Vice President for Programs
The United Board for Christian Higher Education in Asia seeks to fill the new position
of Associate Vice President for Programs. The Associate Vice President (AVP) will
work with the program team to develop and implement the United Board’s programs
to advance whole person education in colleges and universities in 14 countries and
regions of Asia. The position is based in the United Board’s Hong Kong office and
requires travel in Asia and elsewhere.

Summary of Responsibilities:
Programs: Reporting to the Vice President for Programs, the Associate Vice President
will work with the program team as directed to:
1. Identify program needs of Asian Christian higher education institutions, and
other colleges and universities where appropriate, and develop programs that
address those needs;
2. Set priorities and expected outcomes for grant-making; recommend grants for
approval by the board of trustees; evaluate outcomes;
3. Organize conferences, workshops, seminars, and other program activities in
areas of academic importance identified as United Board priorities;
4. Oversee coordination of programs involving individual institutions with other
institutions in the region to create networks within Asia and between Asia and
beyond;
5. Evaluate the effectiveness of United Board programs and those sponsored at
partner institutions;
6. Lead special initiatives and projects as needed.
Administration: With regard to the program support staff, the Associate Vice President
will play a key role in the following:
1. Staff development, including recruitment, mentorship, goal-setting, evaluation,
and supervision;

2. Planning and execution of the annual program budget, monitoring regular
financial reports, and overseeing day-to-day administration of program-related
financial matters;
3. Overseeing certain aspects of office administration to ensure smooth and
effective operations in the Hong Kong office.
Development and Public Relations: While not directly responsible for fundraising, the
AVP will work with other members of the program team to support the development
team to (a) explore potential projects made possible by external funding; (b) ensure
effective and timely reporting to donors; and (c) represent the United Board and
articulate its mission to academic institutions, foundations, individual donors, and
other organizations and entities.
Characteristics: The Associate Vice President must demonstrate the highest moral and
ethical standards and a firm commitment to advancing the mission of the United Board.
S/he must possess a broad knowledge of global and regional trends in higher
education, including Christian higher education, as well as an ability to engage
effectively with institutions of different sizes, resource levels, and traditions across the
Asian region. The AVP must be intellectually versatile, possessing or capable of
acquiring a familiarity with diverse fields of relevance to the United Board’s work,
including whole person education, liberal education, interreligious understanding,
peace education, service-learning, and leadership development. S/he must possess the
personal qualities that allow him/her to move comfortably and respectfully across
cultures, work effectively in a highly consultative manner both within the organization
and with diverse program and institutional partners, and help others to form effective
partnerships. The AVP should also be able to identify and nurture talent, and must
possess the intellect, creativity, and imagination to discern new opportunities for
meaningful work and develop effective program strategies to build on these
opportunities. Finally, s/he must be willing and able to reside in Hong Kong and travel
extensively throughout the Asian region and annually to the United States.
Qualifications and Experience: Extensive experience in higher education globally and
more specifically in Asia, strong managerial skills, demonstrated ability to develop and
execute effective program strategies, experience supervising and mentoring both
program and administrative staff, and outstanding oral and written communication
skills are required. A Ph.D. degree is preferred.
Salary and Fringe Benefits
Salary is commensurate to qualifications and experience. Package also includes
generous annual leave, retirement benefits of up to 15% of basic pay, and
comprehensive medical, dental, and life insurance coverage.
