RiverSides: Low Impact Design (LID) / Green Infrastructure Researcher - Volunteer RiverSides is a non-profit environmental organization dedicated to raising awareness about the impact of everyday activities on the health of our waterways. We promote stormwater management through rainwater harvesting and low impact design at the residential level to reduce stormwater run-off, the leading cause of water pollution in urban areas. We are seeking enthusiastic volunteers to research and compile information about Low Impact Design (LID) or Green Infrastructure projects in Toronto and area. The information will be used for public and expert education and training, including walking tours, case studies on the Homeowner’s Guide to Rainfall website (www.riversides.org/rainguide), and workshops. Tasks will include but not be restricted to: Internet and field research to identify and document LID projects in Toronto and area Interviews of individuals involved in implementing projects as necessary Collecting images / coordinating photography of the projects Writing up information about projects (case studies) Mapping identified sites using Google maps Acquiring copyright/permission to photograph/feature site details Uploading the information onto RiverSides website, other LID databases Skills/Knowledge Proven research and analysis skills Strong written and oral communication skills Knowledge of Low Impact Design (LID) concepts, Green Infrastructure, stormwater issues green building techniques Education/background in Urban Planning, Architecture, Landscape Architecture, Environmental Studies, Civil /Environmental Engineering an asset Enthusiastic, willing to learn and take initiative Ability to work well independently and in a team This is an ongoing project which can involve a number of volunteers according to interest and skills. The first stage will involve identifying LID projects and preparing two case studies by August 17, 2009. Additional research and case studies will follow. This is an unpaid position with a minimum commitment of 20 hours (work hours are flexible). Work will take place at the RiverSides office or from a home office, with some site visits to projects.
