AP European History Hancock FINAL PROJECT - “HISTORICAL ART GALLERY” DUE FRIDAY MAY 28, 2010 Objective: Throughout the year we have looked at and read about the many different eras in European art and how they responded to and reflected the events that were occurring at the time. For your final project, you will create your own “Historical Art Gallery” where you will assemble various pieces of art and ‘mount an exhibit’ to show the history of that period through the art of that period. Directions: You will work in a group of 4. Your group will be assigned a century. You need to make sure that you fulfill all the requirements as listed below. You will have 3 class periods in the computer lab to help you work on this but do not count on that being enough. You will have to work on this outside of class. The project is due on May 28th and each group will present their gallery on either May 28th or June 3rd in class. CONTENT – this is what the exhibit must include: GEOGRAPHY MEDIUM Painting – 15 pieces minimum Sculpture – 10 pieces minimum Architecture – 5 examples minimum Music – 5 pieces minimum Literature/Poetry – 5 pieces minimum TIMESPAN The full span of your assigned century must be shown. Any change over time in the arts must be shown i.e. a shift in eras such as Romanticism to Realism The exhibit must reference at least 5 different historical events of your assigned century. Work/pieces must come from at least 4 different countries minimum Work/pieces from Western Europe and Eastern Europe must be included o o o o CONTENT The exhibit must explicitly show at least 5 historical figures who are not artists. The exhibit must reference/show at least 3 different areas from P.E.R.S.I.A.W.T. At least one woman must be referenced. At least 8 artists’ work must be included. FORMAT – these are directions for how to ‘mount’ your exhibit and what must be included PLACARDS VISUALS/AUDITORY You must have visuals of all appropriate pieces these can come in the following formats: o Postcards o Posters/prints o A printed copy from a color printer o Digital copy as part of a ‘slideshow’ At least 3 pieces of music must be auditorally available to play on laptop, mp3 or CD player o If you cannot get the exact piece of music you can get one that is representative of type. An excerpt or full text of at least 3 pieces of literature or poetry must be neatly printed/created and available to read. Each piece must have its own placard that is ‘mounted’ next to it like in a museum. Each placard must contain the following information: o Title o Artist o Year o Country o Historical Relevance shown EXHIBIT GUIDE & MAP Like any good exhibit you must write a guide that a visitor to your gallery can read to understand what went into the thinking and process of creating and mounting the exhibit. This guide must explain how the artists and pieces were chosen and how they reflect the history of your assigned century. You must draw a map of your exhibit to lead your visitors through the ‘galleries’ you’ve created. This means you have to think about how you want to present your chosen pieces. Consider different options such: o Chronologically o Thematically o By artist o By event o o o o o o PRESENTATION On the day of your presentation, you will need to ‘mount’ your exhibit. This means you must consider how you want to use wall space in the classroom. You are free to use poster boards/display boards etc. You are also free to create a slideshow to be shown on the projector. o There must be 2 copies available on flash drives, email, CDs etc. You will be the tour guides to your exhibit so you must all plan how you want to carry that out. You will have a total of 30 minutes to put up your exhibit and give a tour. ASSESSMENT – a rubric will be handed out in due course You will be assessed on the following criteria: 1. Content – must include all elements listed in directions 2. Presentation/Format – must include all elements listed in directions 3. Creativity – must demonstrate critical historical thinking and original thinking 4. Craftsmanship – must show time and effort and pride in workmanship 5. Tour – the ‘tour’ given in class must be clear, coherent, informative and involve all members of the group You will have 3 grade options only. This project will be approximately 20% of your final semester grade. A – exceeded requirements and standards C – met requirements and standards F – fell below requirements and standards LINKS – the following are links that you can use to help you assemble your exhibit.
