INITIAL ARTICLES IN HAWAIIAN
Initial articles to be ignored in alphabetizing titles:
he
ka
ke
nā
ʻo
ʻo ka
ʻo ke
ʻo nā
Care must be taken when titles begin with words that are spelled
exactly like these initial articles but which have a different
function in the context of the sentence.
WORD DIVISION
Initial articles as well as individual words may be written or
printed in phrases or together with other words.
Examples:
Ka moo olelo
Ka mooolelo
Ke aloha
Kealoha
Kupuna kāne
Kupunakāne
2
SPECIAL CHARACTER
English terms: ʻayn
glottal stop
hamza
turned comma
ʻokina
Hawaiian terms:
ʻuʻina
example: Hawaiʻi
The character represents a consonant that sounds like a break in
the voice.
Unicode:
U+02BB
turned comma
The character always appears to the left of a vowel.
DIACRITIC MARK
English term: macron
Hawaiian term: kahakō
examples:
hālau
Mānoa
The mark indicates that the vowel is lengthened.
Unicode
U+00AF
In OCLC and other cataloging software, this mark is inserted to
the right of the vowel, and it displays above the vowel:
examples:
ā
ē
ī
ō
ū
When both ʻayn and macron are associated with a vowel, the ʻayn
appears to the left of the vowel and the macron appears above
the vowel.
example: ʻōlelo
