WORD DIVISION Initial articles as well as individual words may be written or printed in phrases or together with other words. Examples: Ka moo olelo Ka mooolelo Ke aloha Kealoha Kupuna kāne Kupunakāne 2 SPECIAL CHARACTER English terms: ʻayn glottal stop hamza turned comma ʻokina Hawaiian terms: ʻuʻina example: Hawaiʻi The character represents a consonant that sounds like a break in the voice. Unicode: U+02BB turned comma The character always appears to the left of a vowel. DIACRITIC MARK English term: macron Hawaiian term: kahakō examples: hālau Mānoa The mark indicates that the vowel is lengthened.
