Monday Project Read---9:00-10:30---Unit 16 Lesson 1 Skill: Consonant
cluster str
Teacher will display the words: grin, stop, and truck and ask students what
are the beginning sounds of these words called? Consonant blends.
How many consonants to a consonant blend? 2
In this lesson you will learn about consonant clusters. A consonant cluster
has 3 consonants.
Teacher will display str. The 3 sounds are mixed together.
S, t, and r are stirred together to say /str/ like in strong.
Students will skywrite str.
Teacher will place worksheet 16-3 under the document camera. Students
will practice reading words and sentences, using finger blending and tap and
sweep for str words.
Spell Tabs: Students will head a piece of notebook paper with Spell Tabs at
the top, name and date underneath. Teacher will dictate the following words
and use in a sentence. Students will repeat the word and finger blend before
writing each of the following words. After the activity, class will discuss,
check and correct their work on the Spell Tabs activity.

Dictation Sentences: Students will write the following sentences below the
Spell Tabs words:
1. The pup has the string. 2. Did you fix the strap on your backpack?
Teacher will place the story, “Wet Socks” under the document camera.
Students will practice reading and discussing the story. This story will be
sent home for reading homework.
Tuesday Project Read---9:00-10:30---Unit 16 Lesson 2 Skill—Consonant
Clusters spr, spl, scr
Review Lesson 1 str:
Teacher will display str and remind students that this spelling is a consonant
cluster that has 3 consonants.
Students will practice skywriting the cluster.
Teacher will place worksheet 16-3 under the document camera. Students
will practice rereading words and sentences, using finger blending and tap
and sweep.
Teacher will place the story, “Wet Socks” under the document camera.
Students will read and discuss the story. Teacher will leave the story up
while students complete a short comprehension quiz over the story. After
teacher takes up the quizzes, students will use the story to discuss what
answers that they should have marked on the quiz.
Lesson 2: Consonant clusters spr, spl, and scr
Teacher will display the word spring and ask how many consonants are at
the beginning of this word? 3
What are 3 consonants together called? A cluster.
Students will skywrite spr.
Teacher will place worksheet 16-7 under the document camera. Students
will use finger blending and tap and sweep to read the spr- words and
sentences. Discuss vocabulary as needed. This worksheet will be sent home
for reading homework.
Teacher will display spl and say spl says /s/, /p/, /l/, stir /spl/ like in split.
Example: Mom will split the muffin.
Students will skywrite spl 3 times.
Teacher will place worksheet 16-11 under the document camera and
students will use finger blending and tap and sweep to read spl words and
sentences. This worksheet will be sent home for reading homework.
Dictation: Students will head a piece of notebook paper with Dictation at the
top, name and date underneath. Teacher will dictate the following sentences
and students will repeat, finger blend and write the following sentences.
After work on this activity, students will discuss, check, and correct work on
the dictation sentences:
1. Did the suds splash on you? 2. The ax split the log.
Teacher will display scr and say this cluster captures the sounds /s/, /c/, /r/,
stir /scr/ like in the word scrub. Example: The kids had to scrub the mud off
the truck.
Students will skywrite scr 3 times.
Teacher will place worksheet 16-15 under the document camera. Students
will use finger blending and tap and sweep to read the scr words and
sentences. This worksheet will be sent home for reading homework.
Students will go back to their Dictation paper from earlier and teacher will
dictate the following sentences. Students will repeat the sentences, finger
blend and write. After work on the dictation sentences, students will discuss,
check and correct work on the following sentences:
1. Peg stuffs the cloth cat with scraps. 2. Will you scrub the mud off your
leg?
Class will review the 4 consonant clusters learned: str, spr, spl, and scr.

Teacher will display red word were and ask students what kind of word this
is? Red word
Listen as I read this sentence that starts with the new red word. Were you
with Jack?
Were means that something has already happened. Were can be a question
word.
Listen to this sentence with were in it. The kids were sitting in Bill’s truck.
Students will arm tap and sweep the word were 5 times.
Dictation: Students will head a piece of notebook paper with Dictation at the
top, name and date underneath. Teacher will dictate the following sentences,
students will repeat and finger blend or arm tap to help as they write the
following sentences. After work on these sentences, students will discuss,
check, and correct their work on Dictation:
1. Were the chicks in the shed?
2. The pans were hot.
Teacher will place the story, “Spring” under the document camera. Students
will practice reading and discussing the story. This story will be sent home
for reading homework.
Teacher will place the story, “The Black Angus Ranch” under the document
camera. Students will practice reading and discussing the story. This story
will be sent home for reading homework also.

were. Students will write their answers to the questions on the study guide.
Teacher will check the study guides and students will be asked to take a
closer look and practice what they missed. This study guide will be sent
home for reading homework.
