Rejoice and be glad! Jesus is Risen! Alleluia! We wish and pray that you encounter the Risen Lord and experience the wonderful joy of newness in life. There are many ways in which Jesus’ rising from the dead is a sign of God’s constant work to bring us out from so many things that can sap the life out of us. Easter is the discovery of newness of life in the midst of “tombs” and also the real promise that “God can and does” want us to be “fully alive”, renewed in spirit, heart and mind. Fr. PLEASE TAKE NOTE Divine Mercy Sunday, April 27th is here at St. Joseph’s Church starting from 2:30 pm. Please plan to attend. On February 22nd, 1931 a young Polish nun Sister Faustina Kowalska (now Saint Faustina) saw a vision of Jesus with rays of mercy streaming from His Heart. He told her to have an image painted to represent this vision and sign it” Jesus, I Trust in You.” (This image resides in the prayer alcove at the back of the Church.) In a series of revelations that followed between 1931 and 1938 He taught her that His mercy is unlimited and available even to the greatest sinners. He revealed special ways for people to respond to His mercy in their lives and He gave he several promises (or those who would trust in His Mercy and show Mercy to others. This devotion and Message of Divine Mercy has now spread worldwide. Mercy Sunday Jesus also requested that the Sunday after Easter be officially established in the Church as the Feast of Mercy. Today it is celebrated as requested throughout the world as Mercy Sunday. Jesus Said, “On that day the very depts. Of My tender mercy are open. I pour out a whole ocean of graces upon souls who approach the fount of My mercy (Diary 699) The Canonization of Two Mercy Popes Divine Mercy Sunday, April 27, 2014. Saint Pope John XXIII A warmth, kindness and humility consistently characterized Pope John XXIII making him one of the most admired and loved popes by both Catholics and non-Catholics. He’s popularly known as “Good Pope John” who won so many hearts by his informal style and grandfatherly mien. His Mercy legacy particularly comes down to the Council he convened VaticanII which was a kind of “mercy council.” While other ecumenical Councils were apologetic in character (defending Church doctrines against attacks of heresy) VaticanII was the first Pastoral Council. As Pope John XXIII put it when he opened the Council “Nowadays… (The Church) prefers to make use of the medicine of Mercy rather than that of severity. Saint Pope John Paul II Saint Pope John Paul II wholeheartedly took up the theme of Mercy. He powerfully proclaimed mercy in one of in one of his first encyclical letters RICH IN MERCY (Dives in Misericordia). He pushed for the canonization of Sister Faustina and promoted the modern message of Divine Mercy as a concrete way to help people appreciate the truth of God’s merciful love. In 2000 he officially declared the Second Sunday of Easter as Divine Mercy Sunday. He said “How much the world needs to understand and accept Divine Mercy.” Let us then learn from these two new Mercy Saints to Have Trust in Jesus who is the Way, the Truth and the Life. That in learning more about Jesus and His Church we will be compelled to share this love with others. The faithful who would observe Divine Mercy Sunday with intense devotion will be grated a Plenary Indulgence. (granted under the usual conditions sacramental confession, Eucharistic communion and prayer for the intention of the Supreme Pontiff.
