The 39th Battalion and the Kokoda Track
1.
This is the first worksheet of four that you will complete as part of the Military History
Component of the FAC. It follows on from your theory lessons on Leadership you will have
received on TB 2 as well as the MHC outline you will have been given. You will be required to
complete this worksheet and the companion worksheet on the Principles of War prior to attending
TB 3.
Principles of Leadership
The Principles of Leadership are outlined briefly in the extract from LWD 0.0 Command,
Leadership and Management contained in the same folder as this document on the EAP CD. The
complete reference is available from the Reference folder on the EAP CD. To complete this
activity you will need to study the following references in detail:
LWD 0.0 Command, Leadership and Management
Honner: Kokoda Hero (Peter Brune)
Japanese Operations in SW Pacific (Bullard Translation)
The Kokoda Campaign
Using examples from the Kokoda Campaign describe or explain how each principle was applied
or misapplied by the Allied or Japanese Commanders. While the actions of the Allies are more
fully explained in the references you must also examine the leadership style of the Japanese
commanders and if applicable include an example of how they applied or misapplied a certain
principle of leadership during the campaign.

Cadets must not engage in academic misconduct. Academic misconduct is acting in a way, or
attempting to act in a way, or assisting another cadet to act in a way which could reasonably be
expected to defeat the purpose of a learning experience or an item of assessment or an
examination. Plagiarism, cheating or collusion is evidence of academic misconduct and is a
significant integrity breach. A breach of the above may result in the recommendation for termination
of the offending cadet’s probationary appointment as an officer
THE WORKSHEETS ARE TO BE THE PRODUCT OF YOUR OWN WORK. YOU ARE
NOT TO COLLUDE WITH OR COPY THE WORK OF ANOTHER CADET WHEN
COMPLETING THE WORKSHEETS. IF YOU ARE FOUND TO HAVE COPIED OR
COLLUDED YOU WILL BE SUBJECT TO DISCIPLINARY ACTION WHICH MAY
RESULT IN A CHARGE AND SUBSEQUENT REMOVAL FROM THE COURSE.
Conclusion
Examine the campaign from start to finish and provide an appraisal of how you believe LTCOL
Honner applied the principles of leadership during the campaign. Be prepared to provide
examples of where he succeeded and where he could have done better.
Finally examine your own developing leadership style. Overall how do you rate yourself and
what areas in particular do you need to work on?
