It is a rigorous and time-consuming course. Your reward will be opportunities and information on limnology a fast growing and important part of ecology. Registration: Students must be co-registered for Zool 470 and 470L. While listed separately there is actually only a single course though you will receive separate grades. As you can see from the syllabus there will be some labs that meet on weekends – mostly Saturday. This is because it is impossible to de realistic field biology exercises in the 3 hours allotted by the University for labs. In the past I used Wetzel as the textbook for the course. It is very dense, expensive and does such a poor job of lotic ecology, I had to supplement it with Allen. Now I am trying a smaller (cheaper) book (Cole) for the lentic part of the course and requiring Allan. There are assigned readings from other books which you may borrow on an overnight basis and several other books you will probably want to look over. I have divided the course into two sections one on lentic ecology and one on lotic ecology. The textbook for the lentic phase is Cole “Textbook of Limnology”. There are additional readings from Hutchinson Vol 1. I will have this (out of print) book and several others available for short-term loan. The textbook for the lotic phase of the course is Allan “Stream Ecology” There are additional readings from Morisawa. Again, I have several other books that you will want to borrow. There is also a text (Wetzel & Likens) for the lab part of the course, but to save you money, I will make copies available in the lab room for your use.
