James was born at Wood County Hospital in Bowling Green near his Grandma Rochte's home. James "Jim" lived in
Risingsun, Ohio on Main Street until November of 1954, when his family moved just outside of town on CR 11(7995
Sandusky Country Road 11). As an infant Jim had several medical problems including "yellow jaundice" and infections
causing high temperatures. After having his tonsils out his health quickly improved. Jim grew up there with his two
sisters(one older,Debby and one younger, Nancy). His interests varied but he especially enjoyed baseball, outside
adventures(weather permitting), and imaginary adventures in his bedroom. Jim enjoyed leading neighborhood children in
games and riding his bike around the country. One of his favorite game was imagining he was a big league baseball
player by throwing the ball on the roof from a long distance and racing up and caughting it before it rolls down and hits
the ground. That activity came to an abrupt end when the ball accidently flew the kitchen window scattering glass
everywhere.
As a child he competed in sports of baseball, basketball, and football. He never had the physical abilities to dominate
but tried to play his best. By high school a knee injury limited his ability to play, but his desire to participate allowed him
to manage the varsity football team and serve as a statistician for varsity basketball.
Jim was an average student in school who tried to be a friend to all, especially those that were unexcepted by the
"popular" students. Social Studies was his favorite subject and he represented his class several times in academic
competition. By high school his goal was to help others as a teacher.
All throughout his life Jim felt sensitive to God even when he did not attend church and was not familiar with
scripture. At the age of 15, Jim became interested in spiritual matters. A friend, Mike Hull, asked him to go the church
his father pastored. After attending the Nazarene Church for about a year, he accepted Jesus Christ as his Savior and
Lord. He quickly started serving as youth leader and Sunday School teacher. His heart was drawn toward Christian
service and full-time ministry.
At the age of seventeen Jim became fond of a friend's younger sister. She was a Christian and had many of the
characteristics he desired. Unfortunately she did not return the affection.
In 1970, after graduating Lakota High School, he attended Mt. Vernon Nazarene College and majored in Elementary
Education. Jim transferred to Bowling Green State University in 1972 to receive a teaching credential.
After returning to Northwest Ohio, Jim revived his interest in his friend's sister and surprisingly she had affection
toward him. They fell in love and were married in 1973. The young lady was of course Sandra "Sandy" Jean Klotz.
