Vaccination protocols
The following protocols are general recommendations. Circumstances vary and a
consultation with your veterinarian may be required.
EWT/WNV - Eastern & Western Equine Encephalomyelitis (EEE &WEE), Tetanus and West Nile (WNV).
Flu/Rhino - Equine Herpes Virus 4 & 1 (EHV4/1) and Equine Influenza.
Prodigy - Equine Herpes Virus 1 (EHV1).
Horses less than 1 year;
If the mare was vaccinated:
The horse should be vaccinated with Tetanus and Flu/Rhino at 6 months of age and
boosted 3-4 weeks later.
Born before February: EWT/WNV should be administered at 6 months of age and
boosted 3-4 weeks later.
If the mare was not vaccinated:
The horse should be vaccinated with Tetanus and Flu/Rhino at 4 months of age, boosted
3-4 weeks later and then have a third booster in another 3-4 weeks.
Born before April: EWT/WNV should be administered at 4, 5 and 6 months of age.
Horses 1 year or older;
Acreage/Pasture Horses (closed herd):
EWT/WNV. The vaccine should be administered once a year in the spring. A booster is
needed 3-4 weeks later if the horse has never been vaccinated.
Performance Horses (any horse not living in a closed herd):
EWT/WNV, Flu/Rhino and Strangles (intranasal vaccine). EWT/WNV and Strangles
should be administered once a year in the spring. Flu/Rhino should be administered twice
a year. A booster is needed 3-4 weeks later if the horse has never been vaccinated.
Broodmares:
1.
If the mare is up to date on her annual vaccines then Prodigy should be
administered at 5, 7 and 9 months of gestation. In May or one month before foaling
(whichever comes first) EWT/WNV and Flu/Rhino should be administered.
2. If the mare has never been vaccinated, she should be vaccinated with EWT/WNV
and Flu/Rhino and boosted 3-4 weeks later (before breeding). Then protocol 1.
should be followed.
3. If a non-vaccinated mare gets pregnant, no vaccines should be administered before
45 days of gestation. After the 45 days the mare should be vaccinated with
EWT/WNV and Flu/Rhino, boosted 3-4 weeks later and then protocol 1. should be
followed.
