Technical Tour to Huangshan
Introduction
Huangshan (黄山; literally Yellow Mountain) is a mountain range in southern
Anhui province in eastern China. The area is very famous for its scenic beauty,
with peculiar shapes of the granite peaks, weather-shaped pine trees, and sea of
clouds (雲海). The area also has hot springs and natural pools. Huangshan is
a frequent subject of traditional Chinese paintings and literature. Huangshan
has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1990 for its exceptional natural
beauty and habitat for rare and threatened species. The World Heritage Site
covers a core area of 154 square kilometres and a buffer zone of 142 square
kilometres. (Adapted from Wikipaedia)
The Mainland Liaison Committee is organizing a technical tour to visit
Huangshan and its nearby world heritage sites in late June this year. We will
visit the relevant planning bureaus and the city/county governments and
explore Huangshan’s beauty and the governments’ policies and plans for the
conservation and green tourism for these important world heritages.

the tradition villages of
Hongcun (宏村) and Xidi (西
遞)of Xi County (黟縣) and
The two traditional villages of Xidi and
Hongcun preserve to a remarkable extent the
appearance of non-urban settlements of a type
that largely disappeared or was transformed
during the last century. Their street plan, their
architecture and decoration, and the
integration of houses with comprehensive
water systems are unique surviving examples.
Justification for Inscription
Criterion (iii): The villages of Xidi and
Hongcun are graphic illustrations of a type of
human settlement created during a feudal
period and based on a prosperous trading
economy.
Criterion (iv): In their buildings and their
street patterns, the two villages of southern
Anhui reflect the socio-economic structure of
a long-lived settled period of Chinese history.
Criterion (v): The traditional non-urban
settlements of China, which have to a very
large extent disappeared during the past
century, are exceptionally well preserved in
the villages of Xidi and Hongcun.
