Top today for Continental from R B Bateman-Smith at £190 and the same price for a smart blue bull from R H & M E Oughton. Chris Gallop sold Simmental at £172 with a run of Limousin bulls from P Gumm £129 - £151. Medium bull calves traded £120 - £130 with a few others £70-£100. Half a dozen Friesians on show selling to a top of £35 for T S Baker. Heifers topped at £150 for a very smart Limousin from R T & E B Townsend £129 for a Blue from C & E Best. Medium type heifers £60 - £70. A super run of Simmental x bull and heifer calves from M/s M & B Jordan, Berkeley saw Sept-Nov 06 bulls sell at £231 - £240 with heifers of a similar age £184. Younger Simmental heifers from the same home sold at £134. A weaned Gelbveih steer sold from Mrs M B Jones (Aug 06) sold at £176, Hereford and Angus heifers (Autumn 06) sold at £166 for the Exors of E J Greenaway. A smart weaned blue steer from the same home made £198. IMPORTANT – CALVES Vendors please remember that next weeks sale is the last opportunity to sell weaned calves (42 days plus) prior to the new movement testing regulations which is enforced with effect from 1 st March 2007. With effect from 1st April 2007 no calves can be sold on a temporary passport. An Angus x cow (96) and her Angus cross heifer calf (Oct 06) made £340. 6 Stock Bulls sold to £635 (May 05) for Pedigree Limousin Bull for Mr D Telling with an older Limousin bull (Dec 97) for Miss Coleman making £635. Maurice Cook sold 13 Aberdeen Angus (Feb/May 06) to £588 (Mar 06) (136p) for steers and £350 (May 05) (117p) for heifers. Chris Merrett’s 29 bucket fed weaned off calves sold to very keen bidding with Simmental cross heifer (Oct 06) £228 (120p), Friesian steers (July 06) 3205 (92p), Angus heifers (May 06) £205 (109p). Chris Gallop’s Holstein Friesian bulls made £235 (Mar 06) (84p). 218 Store Cattle – The trade on these was full of spark (equivalent to an electric storm) as bidders from South Wales to East Midlands to North Yorkshire and all counties between bid furiously to acquire the quality steers and heifers which generally seem to be in short supply, but Cirencester again lived up to its reputation for quality steers and heifers many with strength and stretch made like and probably better than the Gloucester Market cattle of 6 years ago. Some of the prices reached were as follows:Strong Continental steers (22-26 mths) sold generally between £650 £700 topping at £802 (108pkg) from M/s K Berry & Son, Coleshill for Belgian Blues with Simmentals to £738 (107pkg) from M/s T & A Rawlings, Purton Stoke. Hereford steers sold to £620 (120 pkg) from M/s L B Cook & Family, Bisley and Aberdeen Angus steers to £650 (108pkg) from M/s D Clark & Son, Tetbury. Strong Continental heifers (22-24 months) met a blistering trade with Bazadias’ to £670 (120pkg) from Mr R Matthews, Toddington, Charolais heifers sold to £660 (110pkg) from M/s T Breakspear & son, Reading with Limousin’s to £688 (110 pkg) from M/s K Berry & Son. Strong Hereford heifers sold to £448 (101pkg) from Mr C Weston, Stone with Angus heifers to £415 (104 pkg). The farming cattle (15 – 20 mths) sold to a very strong trade. Continental steers sold between 108 – 120 pkg with heifers 95-115 pkg generally. The overall average for 330 stores was £457 with steers £491 and heifers £443. 112 Weaned off/young Stores – A good selection sold to extremely strong trade. Fewer lambs forward this week pushed the overall average up 6p/kg. The handyweight hoggs traded between 97 – 112 p/kg topping at 112.1 p/kg £37 for 33kg from RJ & JA Drew. Medium weight hoggs traded generally between 103 – 117 p/kg and heavier sorts 96 – 104 p/kg topping at £52 for 52.5kg from R D Scudamore. Cull Rams sold to £40 217 STORE SHEEP Auctioneer Chris Voyce Fewer store hoggetts this week sold to a firm trade with the best sort generally between £38 - £43 topping at £45 from G & K Potter. Medium hoggs traded between £32 - £37 with only a few smaller lambs forward between £15 - £25. A flock dispersal for Mrs B Gardner saw 16 ewes with 27 lambs sold to £90 with in lamb ewes from the same flock to £54. TB RESTRICTED HOLDINGS We are pleased to announce that as from 1st March 2007 we are able to sell cattle / cows from TB restricted farms every week. These cattle cannot be TB reactors or inconclusive reactors but only cattle / cows from farms under restriction. These cattle / cows can be sold for slaughter only through our RED section and cannot go home or for further fattening. Please ensure tags and paperwork are correct before consigning to market as they cannot return once in the RED section. These cattle must be kept separate from the other cattle in the market and must unload at the designated unloading bays marked red in colour. Vendors must apply for a DEFRA TB movement licence in advance which must accompany the cattle to market. All cattle must still comply with the 6 day standstill as we are not a slaughter only market. 52 OVERAGE CATTLE 11.30 am - Auctioneer: Jon Pullin Another tremendous trade followed that of last week with nearly half of the entry (22) being overage steers and heifers. Cows topped at 80p, steers at £1 and heifers at 94p. Best overage steers topped at £1, £647 for Mr P Bateman with two others at 94p, 89p and 90p from the same home. Overage steers from D A & C M Griffin to 89p, 88p and 84p, steers from M G Wildern to 88p. Few Friesians on offer today a similar trade to recent weeks 71p and 65p for G Timbrell & Son, 71 and 70p for Furzehill Farm Partners. Best cows from D I Corfield at 75p £596. 6TH MARCH – Pedigree Cows & Calves 7 Pedigree Limousin Cows with Calves at Foot/In-calf (3 in-calf heifers, 2 maiden heifers). NAMED SIRES To obtain maximise prices on your cattle, please supply details of Pedigree Sires in full, for Hereford and Angus cattle, just ear tag numbers or “named sire” is insufficient and will not be announced as having a sire name 32 BEEF CATTLE 10.45 am – Auctioneer: Chris Voyce Overall Average –110.8p/kg Steers, Heifers 104.7p/kg A shorter entry this week with only a handful of the best cattle forward. The overall averages for both steers and heifers was up almost 10p/kg. The best cattle were regularly above 125p/kg topping at 132.5p/kg for a Gelbvieh cross form J Bell &son. The commercial cattle sold between 108 – 118 p/kg with lesser sorts 94p/kg. Only a small sample of native breeds forward this week which traded between 84 – 100p/kg.
