These procedures are to be followed in the event of a fire alarm. If there is a bomb alert, instructions specific to the situation will be issued, at the time, by telephone to staff in affected areas. If you see a fire, raise the alarm by breaking one of the "break glass" wall mounted fire alarm boxes. The "break glass" wall mounted fire alarm boxes for this floor are located:………………………………………….. The Security Control Room will call the fire brigade. (The Security Control Room operates on a 24 hour / 365 days per year basis). If you have any information regarding the location of the fire, notify a member of the Security staff so that this information can be passed onto the fire brigade. If smoke is discovered coming from underneath a door or where a door or handle is hot, do not open the door, raise the alarm and evacuate the building. At the emergency assembly area inform the member of Security staff of the location where the fire is suspected. The fire alarm system in the Towers operate differently from other buildings on campus, the Towers have a two-staged system. If a continuous alarm sounds on your floor you should evacuate immediately, if an intermittent alarm sounds, you should prepare to evacuate in the event that the intermittent alarm changes to a continuous one. Each Tower is considered a separate building for fire alarm purposes, therefore if the alarm sounds in Tower One or Tower Two, Tower Three should not evacuate. The fire alarm system in the Towers operates on a two-staged basis, therefore when the fire alarm is activated by a smoke detector, the bells only sound continuously on the floor where the smoke detector has been activated, the bells will also sound intermittently on the floors directly below and above where smoke detector has been activated. This is to give sufficient time for Security to investigate. If the panel is not reset within 7 minutes, the system goes onto full evacuation mode, e.g. all the bells sound continuously and the entire building evacuates. Persons working on floors where the alarm is sounding intermittingly should prepare to evacuate if the alarm begins to sound continuously. In circumstances where the system is activated by a manual break glass call point, the system will immediately go into full evacuation mode i.e. continuous ringing sound all persons must evacuate the building. Whenever an alarm of any type goes off, the lifts go immediately into full evacuation mode. The lift cars go immediately to the ground floor, the doors open to let any persons already inside alight (if entering the lift at ground floor, take care to see if the notice ‘lift car returned to ground’ is displayed in the lift and if so evacuate) and then close. The doors will not re-open until the fire panel has been reset. If the fire is a small one and you feel able to fight the fire with a fire extinguisher or hose, do so, otherwise evacuate, but always raise the alarm first. The fire extinguishers for the floor are located…………………………….. The fire hoses for the floor are next to the doors to the men's and women's toilets. They are operated by twisting the spout at the end of the hose. Leave the building using the nearest fire escape. Do not take your belongings with you. Do not run. Do not use a lift. The fire escape for this floor is accessed through the fire doors by …………………... The fire escape to the left of the lifts in the building’s core should only be used you are prevented from using the other escape by fire. People who feel unable to the stairs should make their way to the fire refuge behind the two sets of doors leading to the fire escape to the left of the lifts in the core of the building. For safety purposes, it is better for someone to remain with you while you wait. Alert your fire warden so that they can inform Security and the Fire Brigade so that you can be rescued. If you have a disability, which may affect your ability to respond to the fire alarm and evacuate the building, using the escape staircases please contact the School’s Head of Health and Safety on ann.obrien@lse.ac.uk so that a ‘Personal Emergency Evacuation Plan’ can be developed for you. The assembly point for Tower Three is the John Watkins Plaza, the area in front of the library. On egress from Tower Three go straight to the assembly point. All staff from……….. should congregate together to check that all staff are safely evacuated. When the building is safe to re-enter, a member of security staff will inform all evacuated staff.
