Csci2412 (Year) Coursework information part 2 Neural Exercise (worth 20% of module assessment) For this exercise you must construct a Neural Network using the matlab Neural Network tool. The problem that you have to consider is the following: There is a certain amount of data which has been recorded on patients in a postoperative recovery area during a pilot data gathering exercise. Patients are looked at in the recovery area and sent to one of three places – the intensive care unit, a general ward or their home. Hospital management would like to consider whether it is possible to delegate part of the decision making process to a computer. Consequently they would like an IT consultant (i.e. you) to assess from the data in the file RawPostOp.xls whether a neural network would be suitable for making the decision between home, the general ward and intensive care. Information on the source and meaning of the data in the file RawPostOp.xls can be found in PostOp.names. You should decide on how you will encode the data for submission to a Neural Network, use an appropriate data manipulation package to implement the encoding and use the Neural Network tool to investigate the problem. You should then submit a report (maximum 1200 words) explaining your investigative process with your recommendations. [Your report should include a (brief) description of the best network that you managed to obtain together with a measure of its performance on the appropriate data] Marking criteria: Quality of the decision on coding of data and the justification for the chosen methods. Choice of training and test data. Network architecture investigation. Conclusions All criteria assessed as indicated in the attached mark sheet. Hand in at student advice centre before 12pm on 20/12/2004. Keep a record of all interim working on this coursework on the H drive for possible inspection by the internal or external examiners – include preliminary networks and all data manipulation activities. <40 No working network obtained 40-50 Poor explanation of decision process and wrong choices 50-60 Poor explanation of decision process but with many correct choices 60-70 Majority of choices correct and justified but not a comprehensive solution. No working network obtained Major issues with the choice of test data A well justified choice but not fully explored Network No architecture working investigation network obtained (0.3) No clear rationale in design Some problems with choice of training/test data Explanation lacking but some investigation carried out Conclusions Perfunctory Limited exploration of relevant issues Coding of data (0.3) Choice of training and test data (0.3) (0.1) No working network obtained Good process explanation with less than complete investigation Relevant issues explored but conclusions and exploratory outcomes at odds >70 A well justified choice which is appropriate to the situation in all cases. A well justified choice thoroughly worked through A well explained process thoroughly worked through Conclusions meet with the outcomes of the investigation and relevant issues explored.
