HOW DO WE MAKE OUR DECISION? We make the decision to open or close school in bad weather based on a careful analysis of all relevant factors, such as: o Information on road conditions from transportation staff and police. We must give careful consideration to the most dangerous roads in our school district. Even if your street looks clear, travel elsewhere in the district may be dangerous. Also, we must consider that high school students drive to school. HOW IS THE PUBLIC NOTIFIED? The quickest and most accurate way to learn of a delay or closing is to check our district website at www.Springboro.org. As soon as a decision is made--before TV and radio stations are called--we send an email to everyone on our distribution list, informing them of the delay or closing. You can sign up for the notification by visiting our website, click “Parent Resources” – “School Closing Information,” then click “One Call Now.” o Amount of snow and ice accumulated. o Whether precipitation is continuing. o Parking lot conditions. o Temperature and wind chill. o Building conditions (such as whether having electricity or heat). o Weather predictions. We prefer not making our decision based on weather predictions, which are not always accurate, but sometimes this is unavoidable. o What other school districts are doing. We share information with other local districts and check whether they are opening or closing. Of course, we also will notify all local TV and radio stations as well. Our district is a member of the Dayton and Cincinnati Emergency School Closing Network. Please keep in mind we have little control over the stations and their broadcast times. Please do not call the school or transportation unless it is an emergency. WHEN IS THE DECISION MADE? A decision to close or delay school must be made no later than 5:30 a.m. in order to notify teachers and students. Problems occur when inclement weather strikes between 6-7 a.m. Several times in the past, our high school and junior high have operated normal schedules, while elementary schools have been delayed or closed. Although we do our absolute best in this process, we know that often no perfect decision exists. If you do not feel that it is safe for your child to attend school, use your best judgment on whether he or she should attend. Also, discourage teenagers from driving in bad conditions and offer them alternatives if weather conditions worsen. Please remember that regardless of inclement weather, students are required to be at their scheduled bus stop five minutes prior to their scheduled pick-up time. We hope that this explanation helps everyone understand the process that our administration uses to make the best possible decision when winter weather arrives.
