Announces A Call for Research Abstracts for the
104th Annual Conference & Expo
Embracing and Managing Change through Family and Consumer Sciences
Houston, TX, June 26-29, 2013
The Community of Colleges, Universities & Research (CUR) announces a call for research
abstracts for either oral or poster presentation at the 104nd Annual Conference & Expo in
Houston, Texas. Preference will be given to proposals that fit the conference theme: Embracing
and Managing Change through Family and Consumer Sciences.
Selection Criteria for Abstracts
Abstracts will be judged in accordance with the following criteria:
(1) Significance, importance, or usefulness of the research; (2) soundness of the research design;
(3) accuracy of analysis and interpretation of the research results; (4) accuracy/relevancy of the
implications and/or conclusions; and (5) clarity and organization of written abstract, including
meeting all requirements listed below.
Abstracts must be original unpublished research, not currently under consideration for
publication. Acceptance for presentation, either poster or oral, obligates the author to register for
and attend the AAFCS 104th Annual Conference & Expo.
Format for Abstract Submission
Two (2) abstracts must be submitted (one blinded and one with author(s) information) via email
to Rosa Purcell (purcellr@ncat.edu) no later than December 15, 2012. UPDATE: The due date
has been extended to January 20th, 2013. Submissions will be peer-reviewed and applicants
will be notified by February 15, 2013.
The abstract must include the following sections in the order given for oral or poster presentation
consideration:
1. Title of the research
2. Name(s) of the author(s), and the name(s) of the institution(s) (following each name, in
cases of multiple authors)
3. If the research is based on a graduate student’s thesis or dissertation, indicated “Graduate
Student” followed by the name of the student and “Faculty Advisor” followed by the
name of the advisor
4. Indicate the corresponding author with an asterisk (*) and include the corresponding
author’s email address
5. Purpose and Rationale
6. Methodology (including research design, data collection, and analysis procedures)
7. Findings
8. Conclusions
9. Implications for research and/or practice
10. Preference for the type of presentation (oral, poster, or no preference)

11. Category in which research best fits (Apparel, Design & Textiles, Education &
Technology, Family Economics & Resource Management, Family Relations & Human
Development, Nutrition, Health & Food Management, Other)
Identify only one category.
Abstract cannot exceed 500 words and must fit on one page. Use Times New Roman and no less than 11
point font size. Abstracts will be published on the AAFCS website.
NOTE: Due to time constraints, a limited number of oral presentations will be accepted.
Additional Information for the Graduate Student Research Competition
The Community of CUR will also sponsor a graduate student competition to recognize
excellence in graduate student research. First, second, and third place recognitions will be given
with the 1st place entry being awarded free registration for the Annual Conference
(Registration will be paid by CUR).
FOR GRADUATE SUBMISSIONS ONLY, the submission form must include the name of the
faculty advisor. Graduate students will follow the same general format as other authors.
These are additional requirements for graduate students:
1. Research must be based on a project, such as a thesis or dissertation.
2. Research must have been the primary responsibility of the student.
3. Abstract must be submitted from students who are currently enrolled in a graduate
program.
4. Students receiving recognition must attend the 104th Annual Conference to make a
presentation of the research, either through poster session or oral presentation, depending
on the format in which research is accepted.
5. Student winners will be recognized at the time the research is presented or during the
poster presentation time period.
NOTE: ALL Posters must be 48”wide by 36” high.
