JOB VACANCY, Netherlands Institute for Fisheries Research(RIVO) The Ecology team PELAGIC ECOLOGIST Full time position (36 hrs) for 1 year General: RIVO is the most important Dutch research institute for fish and shellfish. We employ 90 researchers who address issues on biology, ecology, and production of fish and shellfish. Our research is organised around four fields; sustainable fisheries, aquaculture, environment and seafood safety. RIVO is part of Wageningen University and research centre. The Ecology team, executes ecological research on fish and benthic fauna in the sea, in coastal zones and in freshwater. The research focuses on impact assessment of offshore infrastructural development, and the impact of fishing on fish stocks and benthic invertebrates. In addition, the implications of the EU Water Framework Directive and the Birds and Habitat Directive are investigated. We also investigate marine protected areas and long-term effects of climate change on fish communities. Job description: You will execute scientific research on the marine pelagic ecosystem from a fish and fisheries point of view. Changes in the ecosystem are being observed that currently raise research questions such as the effect of climate change on stocks of herring and blue whiting in the North East Atlantic Ocean. Your research may have implications for the management of these stocks. You will carry out the research as part of (international) project teams and you will participate in workshops abroad and surveys at sea. You will be required to regularly publish results in peer reviewed journals. Requirements: An ecologist, preferably holding a PhD degree, with ample experience in the marine pelagic ecosystem. You must be able to show proof of your experience through your scientific publications. You must be a team player and, together with your colleagues, you must be able to develop new initiatives to further establish research on the pelagic ecosystem within RIVO. You must be well aware of societal trends and developments that determine the research agenda.
