JOB VACANCY, Netherlands Institute for Fisheries Research(RIVO)
The Ecology team
PELAGIC ECOLOGIST
Full time position (36 hrs) for 1 year
General: RIVO is the most important Dutch research institute for fish and shellfish. We employ 90
researchers who address issues on biology, ecology, and production of fish and shellfish. Our
research is organised around four fields; sustainable fisheries, aquaculture, environment and seafood
safety. RIVO is part of Wageningen University and research centre.
The Ecology team, executes ecological research on fish and benthic fauna in the sea, in coastal
zones and in freshwater. The research focuses on impact assessment of offshore infrastructural
development, and the impact of fishing on fish stocks and benthic invertebrates. In addition, the
implications of the EU Water Framework Directive and the Birds and Habitat Directive are
investigated. We also investigate marine protected areas and long-term effects of climate change on
fish communities.
Job description: You will execute scientific research on the marine pelagic ecosystem from a fish
and fisheries point of view. Changes in the ecosystem are being observed that currently raise
research questions such as the effect of climate change on stocks of herring and blue whiting in the
North East Atlantic Ocean. Your research may have implications for the management of these stocks.
You will carry out the research as part of (international) project teams and you will participate in
workshops abroad and surveys at sea. You will be required to regularly publish results in peer
reviewed journals.
Requirements: An ecologist, preferably holding a PhD degree, with ample experience in the marine
pelagic ecosystem. You must be able to show proof of your experience through your scientific
publications. You must be a team player and, together with your colleagues, you must be able to
develop new initiatives to further establish research on the pelagic ecosystem within RIVO. You must
be well aware of societal trends and developments that determine the research agenda.
Conditions of employment: Your function within RIVO will be varied and interesting with a lot of
space for developing in your own initiatives. We pay attention to personal development and offer good
opportunities for that. Depending on your expertise and experience, the salary will be € 4038 per
month maximum (before taxes).
Location: IJmuiden, the Netherlands.
