FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE THURSDAY 24TH JULY 2014 CHEWTON GLEN’S LUCY JONES JOINS ‘SQUAD UK’ Lucy Jones and Squad UK colleagues (pictured second from the left) Following Lucy Jones success in the UK competitions for WorldSkills, she has been awarded a place in ‘Squad UK’ as part of ‘Find a Future’ and ‘WorldSkills São Paulo 2015’. Lucy has also been selected to represent the UK at EuroSkills in Lille in October 2014. WorldSkills is the largest international skills competition in the world. Held every two years, the competition sees around 1000 young people, aged 18-25, from all over the world come together to compete for medals in more than 40 different skills including Electrical Installation, Welding, Web Design, Cooking and Bricklaying. WorldSkills São Paulo 2015 takes place from 11-16 August, 2015. Head Waitress Lucy Jones will be competing in the Restaurant Services category. Minister for Skills and Enterprise Matthew Hancock said: “The WorldSkills Competition is an opportunity for the UK to showcase and celebrate our young apprentices on the global stage. It goes to show, that for every skill and every vocational area, we can and should celebrate excellence. The young people who have earned a place on Squad UK are ambassadors for our country and demonstrate how high quality apprenticeships can lead to successful careers. I congratulate each and every member of Squad UK.” Anita Bower, Director of Human Resources at Chewton Glen said: “Lucy’s place in the Squad UK is a tremendous personal achievement and we are delighted and thrilled for her, she has shown exemplary skills and real dedication to her professional training. We have watched her career develop from starting at Chewton Glen as casual member of the team in 2011 working two evenings a week in our staff restaurant, whilst studying for her Diploma in Hospitality Supervision at Brockenhurst College in the New Forest. She was promoted in May 2012 to weekend Commis Waitress in our main Vetiver restaurant and then appointed as Head Waitress in December 2013. She has continued to excel and received the Chewton Glen Award of Excellence in 2014”. Commenting on Lucy’s success Cathy MacArthur, Lecturer in Hospitality Studies at, Brockenhurst College said: “After leaving school in 2010 Lucy spent 3 years studying within the Department of Hospitality Studies at Brockenhurst College, and it was evident from an early stage that she had a talent and passion for the Hospitality Industry and excelled in Front of House Operations. Lucy is a delightful young lady and I am delighted to have been able to work with Chewton Glen to support her in the training which has helped her secure a place in the UK squad for WorldSkills, and I am thrilled that she will be competing at EuroSkills in Lille in October. We are all very proud of Lucy and Brockenhurst College will continue to support her as she progresses through the next stages of the competition”. The 98 members of Squad UK were selected following three days of intense competition. Squad UK will now spend the next 11 months training in their skill supported by their training provider, college, employer and a dedicated training manager. In May next year the members of Squad UK will compete for a coveted place in the team that will represent the UK at WorldSkills São Paulo 2015. The training programme for Squad UK includes EuroSkills Lille 2014, Europe’s largest skills competition which takes place from 1 – 5 October, 2014 and The Skills Show which takes place from 13-15 November, 2014. They are a spectacular promotion of the professions which are held every two years in one of the WorldSkills European member states. The 2014 competition will take place in Lille in France and following Lucy Jones success in the UK competition held in Belfast, she will travel to Lille to take her place alongside hundreds of talented competitors to represent the UK in EuroSkills 2014.The best of the best young European professionals will showcase their talents here, it is a total experience and an inspiration for all.
