Hypotheses Picture 1: pp 62-63 (Canada Revisited) There is more than one community in the close vicinity. There are tepees on the side closer to us, and further away there is another circle of tepees. It is after the Europeans have arrived because they have horses. They did not have horses before the Europeans arrived They use most parts of the bison because the picture shows that they use using not only the meat, but the bone. It seems as everyone is occupied with a job, whether it be cooking, hunting, cleaning or creating. It seems as they are very busy. They travel with cargo (items) often. They have many horses attached to large wagons that could carry heavy loads of items they were trading or selling They trade and sell goods. I can see people packaging things and loading them on the wagons. They hunt for buffalo in the same place every year. There is a carcass of a buffalo. It is just bones, it would take days to decompose and they hunt for buffalo one a year. It is a society where it is the female’s job to cook and clean. Only the women in the picture are cooking and cleaning. They live a nomadic lifestyle. The cargo wagons might be used to transport tepees and other living essentials around. They need to live a nomadic lifestyle because the land looks barren; they need to follow the food. They are protective of their belongings and family (tribe/clan). There are guards everywhere keeping a lookout and holding guns and weapons. Picture 2: pp 17 (Canada Revisited) They are near a harbor or waterway. There are boats in the back ground. They might be moving or migrating. There are wagons full of items and there are clothes and item chests. They might have arrived, and had a long, tough and perilous journey. There is a man either passed out or sleeping under the wheel of the wagon. There is a protest going on. There are picket signs waving in the air. Once they have arrived, they didn’t know where they wanted to go. There is a man that looks like he is still deciding on where to go, and there are two people pointing in two different directions. This was a pit stop where they could rest and eat. There is a lady pouring drinks and eating, while a man is sleeping. The people pointing people in directions were people from the area, Upper and Lower Canada and not immigrants. This picture was located in Lower Canada. If this picture was of the great migration, the only place big ships in the background could get to was Lower Canada. Whole families of all generations were coming; it was not just the men. There is a baby, younger person and an elder. The people protesting are all from different places with different opinions. The signs are different, some say Quebec, some say Boston and the rest say other things. There is no correlation between these things. Picture 3: There is some sort of event or party going on. People are dancing, hugging and smiling This is a trading place. There are barrels going around, stores on both sides and ships coming from all over. There are some angry people at the Ship Tavern. There is a man with a gun, pointing at the ships. There might be a rebellion. People are rolling the barrels into the sea. Maybe the picture is depicting the Boston Tea Party. There is some fighting going on. There is a war like machine going into the water. People that fought in wars are coming back or possibly leaving. There are people in uniform embracing others. This is a port, ships come here regularly. There is a ship tavern and there are many ships in the scene. They are glad that something has happened. They are playing the fiddle and embracing each other. These ships have come a long way. The ships are large with massive masts. If it was across a lake or a river, a large ship would not be necessary. Dogs are domesticated. They are not hunting and there are dogs around playing with the people and children. Picture 4: pp 57 (Canada Revisited) The people were laid back. Not everyone was working; some people were just sitting and relaxing. This was a summer home. Their houses are not permanent; they are portable and are able to be re built. It is a community of natives. Natives use tepees and there are many tepees in the vicinity. They often traveled by water. There are canoes in the picture. They are making preserves for their meat or herbs. They are not making butter or anything dairy as they did not have access to cows or goats, and they were not grinding corn because they did not have access to corn either. Fish is one of their main sources of food right now. The only easy access to food (meat) is fishing, and they are fishing in the back. They have a dog for guarding purposes. The dog is not playing with the people; rather it is on the side looking out. They hand crafted their canoes as they did not have access to store and they had many trees to use. They had many people in the community as they had numerous canoes and each canoe could probably hold many people (5-7). They might have had warming fires in the tepees as they have holes on the tops of them, as if to let the smoke out. Picture 5: pp 83 They have hunted whale. There is meat slabs all over and there is a grey shape in the water. It is a fishery. There are all the supplies of a fishery in the picture. They are planning another trip. Ships are coming in, and they are looking at maps and getting supplies ready. They are cooking the meat and leaving them to dry on the roof. The seagulls are attracted. There is also smoke coming out of the huts. There are more fisheries in the vicinity. There are two other huts with men working with sticks. I think the sticks are fishing rods. They are also fishing for fish, not only whale. There are smaller boats out that are fishing. There are ships coming in to pick up fish to sell or trade. The ships are coming in and they are getting barrels and packages ready. They are near a massive body of water, an ocean. The ships in the back are so big that the would only be used to transport people and goods over large bodies of water. It is during the summer. It is not winter because there would be ice and snow, during spring they hunt for seals and during fall they do more fishing. Summer is the only season they hunt for whale. This was a large industry in the area. There are three fisheries in a very small area. If it was not as popular, the fisheries would probably be more spread out.
