Read the article on lighting and respond to the questions following it.
Fall is illuminated with the hottest
trends in lighting
Winter feels like it’s here, and the
days are significantly shorter. As we
begin our winter tradition of
cocooning, we rely more and more on
our in-home lighting – and this fall is
lighting up with great traditional and
contemporary lighting choices.
Don Richardson, of Richardson
Lighting, knows a lot about today’s
lighting trends. The knowledgeable
staff at Richardson Lighting have
helped Regina residents find the
perfect lighting accents for their
homes for over 35 years. They have
seen many trends come and go – and
others stay as classic choices.
“This season’s lighting trends run
from traditional to very contemporary
– with the focus on quality,”
comments Richardson. “But
regardless of what type of lighting our
clients are looking for, the most
important thing to consider is the
mixture of function and style. It has to
work for their home.
One style that seems to work in many
homes is the traditional Tiffany lamp.
Tiffany lamps have changed – and
they have remained the same. The
stained glass shades are still
classically beautiful, but there are
subtle differences that make the
newer styles stand out. “Smaller,
more intricate, glass sections and the
integration of decorative sections of
metal with the glass have given the
Tiffany lamps a beautiful new look,”
notes Richardson. It is a new look to
a timeless piece.
Another popular light that has seen a
new twist is the flush-mounted dome
light. Simply designed and
inexpensive, these fixtures are often
used as the main light source in

bedrooms and hallways. The most
common type sports a frosted glass
dome with an outer ring and inner
point; but now a more contemporary
design is available. “This year, the
clip style, dome lights have been the
choice of many homeowners,”
explains Richardson. “The flushmounted clip light has no outer ring
or inner point, which gives the
fixture a much cleaner look; in fact,
the glass becomes the focal point.”
Different styles of glass are
available for these lights – the
Murano (Italian) faux alabaster
glass being the most popular. The
clips are also available in most
popular finishes.
The faux alabaster glass is also
very popular in bowl-style pendants
and multi-light chandeliers. The
demand for these is high, as
homeowners appreciate the way
these fixtures enhance the décor in
dining rooms and foyers with their
eye-catching styles. “These lights
are available in a variety of
finishes,” comments Richardson.
“Demand for the pewter finish has
been strong, but the antique brass
has been gaining in popularity.”
Mini pendant lights also come in a
wide variety of glass shades, fixture
styles.
“Pendant lights are contemporary
and sought after by customers for
islands and serving counters,” says
Richardson. “The new designs are
decorative and functional; and are
compatible with almost any interior
style.”
Contemporary has also moved
into the bathroom. “Homeowners
are incorporating exceptional
designs into all areas of the home –
including the bathroom,” states
Richardson. “We have responded
to this by offering many unique
lighting options.” Simple

over-the-sink fixtures are not standard
anymore. Now sconces, vanity lights
(in a wide range of styles and finishes),
and even less observable fixtures –
such as recessed, puck and mini-pots
are being used to create a fresh new
look.
When choosing the right lighting option,
sometimes less is more. Mini-pots and
puck lights can create the perfect
accent lighting for a number of areas in
the home; such as under counters, in
alcoves or in wall units. “Recessed
lighting too, is one of the most versatile
lighting options available to our
customers,” explains Richardson.
“They are used in almost any room
within the home for both task and
accent lighting.”
“We also carry a number of
outdoor wall lights in a wide
variety of styles,” notes
Richardson. “Many customers
use them to accent their home’s
exterior style.”
Outdoor or in, traditional or
contemporary, the styles, colours
and options that are available to
consumers is vast. “Choosing the
best lighting options for your
home can be a little
overwhelming," concludes
Richardson. “Taking the time to
look at all the choices, and having
your questions answere by
knowledgeable lighting experts
can help; and will ensure that your
decisions will provide the style
and function that work for you.”
Unlike other exterior lights, recessed
soffitt lights are hidden – they don’t
interfere with the exterior lines of the
home. They can also be installed
around the whole house, illuminating
the entire area and increasing safety
around the structure.
