This course focuses on acquisition of English set expressions, set phrases, phrasal
verbs and idioms in a range of topics. Because of both difficulty and the importance
of collocations, set phrases, phrasal verbs and idioms direct instruction and practice is
advocated.
Course requirements:
Students will attend class regularly and do homework assignments. The final exam
will be a written test covering the topics, collocations, phrasal verbs and idioms
studied during the semester.
Provisional programme: 1. Introduction to vocabulary learning. Single words. Set phrases. Variable phrases.
Phrasal verbs. Idioms.
2. Additional aspects of vocabulary knowledge. Polysemy. Connotation and usage.
Frequency. Collocations.
3. English collocations in use. Types of collocations. Exercises. Games.
4. Collocations in newspaper English and business English.
5. Everyday verbs (1, 2) and adverbs.
6. Synonyms and confusable words (1, 2).
7. Collocations according to particular topics (Weather, Travel, News, Money).
8. Phrasal verbs. Structure. Meaning. Practice.
9. Phrasal verbs in context (Bill´s story).
10. Idioms in use.
